    Different cpu in pavilion

    I currently have a pavilion a317x with a 2.5 ghz celly. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...cname=bph07813
If I put a 2.4 ghz p4 northwood socket 478 in this mobo will it work or will my system now reckognize it and give me some errors? It probably isnt that simple but I learn as I go so let me know........Thanks

It should work fine, though you might want to download the newest bios for your mobo if you don't have it already.
    Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit
    File Server: AMD Opteron 180 / 3gb DDR400 / Nvidia 6200 / WinXP Home 32bit / Lubuntu 12.10
    Laptop: HP-Compaq nc8430/ Intel CoreDuo T2400 / 2gb DDR2 667/ Ati x1600 / WinXP Pro 32bit

Thanks Solo. I guess if it is a socket 478 it should fit. I wonder how high I could go in ghz. Im about to build a different system and eveything seems pretty basic. I know there are limitations with Dell HP Emachines etc. I wanted to put a new (or better) cpu in this old machine for awhile but didnt know it would be so simple. I thought that the mobo wouldnt reckognize the cpu and problems would arise w/ the O.S also.

3.4ghz is the highest you can go with socket478, but that does not mean it will support it.

    what model is your motherboard?

just because the socket is the same and the core is also doesnt mean it will work, keep that in mind.
I know dells have there upgradeable cpus on the ducuments, you got to find it or else your guessing, You cant hurt your mobo with a cpu, but can damage the cpu if wrong type.

From looking at the HP mobo description, it only supports 400mhz FSB processors - Northwood and Willamette cores. It wouldn't be worth the expense to upgrade without going to a higher FSB, but there are 2.4, 2.5, 2.6 & 2.8 versions of the P4 Northwood with 400mhz FSB.

They made 2.8's with a 400fsb? Didn't they stop with the 2.2's on northwoods?

The rest I beleive are 533mhz fsb as i used to own a 2.5

Yup, they made up to 2.8 w/ 400mhz fsb. I have a 2.6 400mhz fsb in my old Dell. I'm using the PowerLeap 423 to 478 socket adapter with it. It replaced the original 1.5ghz willy.

So what would happen if I get a cpu with a different fsb? Just Curious. Oh yeah, I looked around and cant find a P4 socket 478 2.6, 2.8 with a 400 mhz fsb. I looked at newegg tigerd and ebay. Any suggestions

    I found a 2.8 400fsb but it's $219.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a bare cpu too - no heatsink/fan & only a 30 day warranty. Not worth it IMO.

    Maybe you could check e-bay?

If you put a 533fsb northwood cpu into a 400fsb mobo I think it will work, it will just underclock the processor. Not only would a prescott probably not boot, it may damage the mobo or cpu.

What happened to the 3.0? with a 400mhz FSB. They used to be the fastest Northwood with a 400mhz buss, but I haven't seen one in years.
Did they just run out of them, or was something wrong with them?

Edit: I'm loosing my mind. I guess there is no such thing.
I must be thinking of the 533 fsb 3.06, they are hard to find.

You realise if you find a 2.8ghz 533fsb northwood, if it runs it will run at 2.1ghz. The 3.06ghz 533fsb will only run at 2.3ghz. There is a chance the mobo will support a 533fsb cpu at the correct speed, but I would try to borrow a cpu to try before buying one.

I did a little looking around at Intel's website and found out the 845GL chipset only supports 400FSB cpu's. There are several other 845 chipsets that support 533 and 400.

Thanks for the heads up. I found a 2.4 ghz northwood 400 fsb and concidering a purchase. The wierd thing is that my computer that has the 2.5ghz celeron, radeon 9200se (PCI slot I must add), 1gig, plays HL2, Doom3, FarCry and UT2004 just fine on medium settings. I just thought that if I put a p4 in that computer it will run faster until I build another system. I only play multiplayer and can still hang score wise with the big systems. Im debating on building a better gaming system or just getting an xbox 360.
