When's the last time that was a problem.
I have an old Compaq here that has a PII in it. It has cache in a slot on the mobo. I threw a PIII 450 in it and it recognizes it as a 300 because of the bus. When 2000 is booting it hangs. Could the problem be having the 2 sources of cache? BIOS has no way of turning off cache. The placement of the cache on the board would require me removing everything from the case to get to it so I haven't tried simply pulling it out. These people can't afford anything so getting the PIII to work would make everyone happy. Can it be done, alternately might it not even be cache that is causing the problem?
EDIT - I put the PII 233 back in and it boots all the way, so I'm looking at cache to be the problem even more so now.

Sounds like you need either a bios update or the motherboard just doesn't support 100Mhz fsb.
And it can't be that it's having trouble with that extra cache, cause the P2 is actually the same layout as the P3, only difference is speed and fsb. And a few added instructions, nothing major.
I'd look up the model number of that puter and search for a bios update.

I don't care if the chip gets to 100mhz fsb but the PIII has onboard cache and there is also cache on the mobo, this can't be a problem? I personally don't remember a PII board with cache on the mobo before this one either. Maybe I just forgot a lot. |

| If that were a problem, then the problem should also occur with the P2, since it's basically the same as the P3, save a few minor changes.
well, the only thing you're changing is the cpu, so my guess would be that the bios needs an update.
And be sure that the voltage for the cpu is not too high, it's possible that the P3 runs on a lower voltage then the P2. |
