Ok I've just about $500 to build a dual core machine. I'd need a chip, mobo, ram and psu. So that buys me an X2 3800+ with a gig of ddr 400 or the Pentium D 920 with a gig of DDR2 800. Any thoughts on if I should be drawn to that DDR2 or anything. Toms has the two chips as mostly back and forth but it looks like the 920 had an edge if I remember correctly.

Well it depends on what you're gonna use the system for...
X2's are better in games whereas Pentium D's have an edge in 'other' apps.... X2's run cooler than Pentium Ds but come clocked only @ 2GHz (I've seen X2 3800+'s OC to 2.6GHz + on air.... but it all depends....)... on the other hand the D920 comes clocked at 2.8GHz but it WILL run hotter than an X2 so your OC'ing results may not be that great....
In the end I guess I'd suggest an X2.

The reviews for the 920 never put it over the mid 40's as far as temps. Either chip is 10x's what I need for gaming. I guess the biggest question was about the ram, I mean if I can run @800 mhz that's got to count for something right or not?
The opty's put me out of the price range for a lesser frequency. I really can't mess this one up, school is expensive and I need something that will carry me through it for coding and video mostly. |

Well I woke up late but I'm getting the X2 3800+ or 4200+ just depends on how circuitcity goes. It's 200 cheaper than newegg to just buy the Acer with everything already in it.
A somewhat random note though, the 920 seems to be better for gaming.
Ofcourse, this means no overclocking if I buy the Acer but maybe i shouldn't be overclocking my livelyhood anyway. |
