| An Amd Chip Equal To Intel
Hey, I've always had a pentium processor so im curious, in your opinions which is the better processor as i am thinking of building a new AMD system. my old system has a socket 478 P4 3.4Ghz with hyperthreading. what would be an equivalent AMD to that processor and how much would it cost. aswell as an AMD processor a step above it? Thanx preferrably a 939 Socket
P4 3.4Ghz/HT socket 478

Amd Athlon 64 3400+ would be the obvious one. |

ok thanx. i just had no idea really cuz i know the speeds are different and that an amd chip of equal clock speed would outperform the intel chip.
if u dont mind me asking, what is the newest socket type for amd and are they planning on releasing a new socket in the near future?

939 is the newest, AM2 will be out within a month
but my advice is to wait untill intel releases the core 2 duo, and if the numbers are as good as they say get that

Ya, I would also say you should wait(for the Conroe(aka Core Duo 2))...if you want one now though, I would reccomend an X2 3800+... |

The numbers are not comprable to intel speeds so a 3400+ is not necessarily equivilent to a 3.4GHz, so it isn't so "obvious"
Performance wise, i'd say the 3700+ is the 3.4GHz equivilent.

Solo, you don't know what you're talking about. Please provide me some concrete evidence showing a 3700+ dominating a 3.4GHz P4 besides your own (wrong) opinion... Be my guest and go check out tomshardware cpu charts and you will see they are about even. The 3700+ winning some and the 3.4 winning others. Here, i'll help you get started. http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.ht...=73&model2=325
Go ahead and run through the tests and tally up the 3.4 wins vs the 3700+ wins. |

alright thanx for the advice, i think ill wait for the new releases in a couple months, that way if im feelin rich i can go big with the new stuff or get somethin older but still good or cheaper, like the 3700+ as mentioned or go a little bigger to a 4000+ or even try an fx model. |
