    New ram some advice

Hey again guys, following your last help ive decided to purchase some more ram, ive picked some within my price range, and wondered what u guys thought.

i have an Asus A8V-E Deluxe,

    GeIL Ultra X Series Dual Channel Kit - memory - 1024 MB ( 2 x 512 MB ) - DIMM 184-PIN - DDR

    Corsair XMS memory - 1024 MB ( 2 x 512 MB ) - DIMM 184-PIN - DDR

    Corsair Value Select memory - 1 GB - DIMM 184-PIN - DDR

Geil® Value 1Gb PC3200 Dual Chan DDR Kit (2x512MB) (Cas 2.5 6-3-3) with Aluminium heat spreader

They all have those Cas then numbers, i don't know what this means, so if some1 could suggest what i need to find with those.

Finally ive still yet to sort out a new fan for my MOBO im thinking a heatsink is probably the best option, but i don't know what size i need.

As always guys your help is greatly appreciated.

are you planning on overclocking? my best bet is to get a value set of 2x1GB
    AMD Opteron 146 2.8ghz 280x10
    1GB GEIL ONE S PC3200
    DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D
    ATI X1800XT @ 700/800
    Enermax Noisetaker 485W

    hey

No i dont plan on overclocking, mainly because i don't know how too etc

I would obviously like 2x1gb but that tends to go up £120+ which is a bit much for a poor student like me!

I think the top Geli stuff looks good, it says its on offer on the www.microdirect.co.uk website, so im assuming its better than its price!

    AMD Opteron 146 2.8ghz 280x10
    1GB GEIL ONE S PC3200
    DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D
    ATI X1800XT @ 700/800

    Update!

Ive looked into it, 2 gig value = £120
1 gig Ultra X is only £58 cos it is on special offer.

While i was checking that out i noticed "cas" scores, what do these mean?

My current (broken ram) is 2-2-2-5 the Ultra X is 2-5-2-2 does this matter?

Also if anyone has ideas on replacing mobo (not cpu fans) on Asus motherboards id appreciate the help, having a nightmare finding a new one!

Hey, i looked for the 2gig value like you suggested, it cost £120 whereas the 1 gig Ultra X is only £58 (due to sale)

While i was looking at those, i noticed "cas" numbers, my current (broken) ram is 2-2-2-5 where as the Ultra X is 2-5-2-2 Will this matter? i have no clue as to what it means, or if different values are compatable!

Finally, if someone could help me find out what size motherboard (NOT cpu fan) fan i need for an Asus A8V-E Deluxe and where i could buy one from, and if its easy to install or whether ill need to go to a shop i would greatly appreciate it (its been broken for months)

    Thanks a lot

    ^^ It'll have have better -- tighter -- timings (2-2-2-5).

I think this is a good deal. This too. This three.

That's a mistake. Both -- your old RAM and the Ultra X -- have the same timings 2-2-2-5. Latencies do have a performance impact -- albeit *very* small -- the tighter the timings the better. If it's DDR400 (or above) it'll be compatible with your MoBo. It must be DDR RAM -- DDR2 will NOT work in DDR slots or viceversa.

I think you mean Chassis fan -- I doubt you want a MoBo chipset fan - if that was broken you'd also need a new MoBo... . What kinda fan you need depends on your case. Choices include 60mm, 80mm, 120mm, 130mm etc. -- 80mm and 120mm are the most common...

Sorry the constant posts, keep thinking of more things to ask!

I don't think its a chassy fan, its the tiny fan below my CPU cooler, it appears to be attached to the motherboard via two little black things on springs, ive had no warning message from the PC regarding it not working, which i think is a little odd.

It says ASUS on it as well, which is the make of my MOBO

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...4&GroupID=1116 is the X one, which to me appears as good if not better than the other one, or ami missing something vital! (sos for so many q's)

Hmm... sounds like a chipset fan.... WTF? Could a MoBo live without the chipset fan? Anyways you need to replace it ASAP....

Does it look anything like this... or resembles -- even remotely -- the one below?

Yeh it looks exactly like that, its been broken for about 2months or so no, in bios it says its not running as well.

    My friend said to get
    http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=602689

And then remove the mobo and you can change it

Ah cool, might order the Ultra X or Corsair one you recomended tonight then.

    EDIT:
Gotta go for dinner now, thanks a lot for your help mate

Yotta, FYI most mobo's work fine with only a passive heatsink on the north bridge. The fan has died on both my Abit boards. I unplugged the fan on the mobo I don't overclock monthes ago & haven't had any problems at all. I waited a few monthes to replace the fan on the board I overclock. It didn't have any impact on the overclock, but since I run higher than stock vagp I decided to keep it actively cooled.

Ya, most people dont have problems when that fan dies. From what i can tell, it doesnt seem to be to big of a deal. Although, it would be wise to replace it, especially since they only cost a couple dollars.

You can find them on web sites under Cooling Devices > Chipset Fans
I would think passive cooling(a heatsink alone) would be sufficient.
