AMD intends to follow in Intel's footsteps and retire both its flagship brand and its model numbering scheme. Processors based on AMD's next-generation architecture will be branded "Phenom X2" for dual-core chips, "Phenom X4" for quad-core models, and "Phenom FX" for top-of-the-line offerings.
AMD's purported marketing slogan for these new chips? "Experience the Phenomenal."
AMD reportedly intends to keep using the Athlon and Sempron brand names for mainstream and budget chips, though. The new Phenom brand will be accompanied by a new model numbering scheme that will do away with the current performance rating "plus" number.
What does TechIMO think of the new name ?
I think it sounds pretty good to be honest.

Meh. The name ain't too bad but the slogan is lame.
If they make it rhyme with 'venom,' that'd be cool. |

It will probably take me a bit to warm up to, but I can't say athlon didn't sound strange when they came out and I was still on a K6-2. I guess this is probably not a bad idea for the most part. Core 2 duo isn't exactly a thrilling name either, but is probably worth more of a name change since intel drastically changed their processors making them efficient for once.
Tho I never still really liked it or the sempron name, but that doesn't matter I guess. Phenom is a different name that sounds more natural than sempron when saying it or listening people try and guess how to say it.

I just hope they don't start using the lame numbering schemes Intel used in the Pentium D's. :swoon: |

I don't understand why they'd change it. Athlon was a good brand and sounded good the very first time I heard it. Now it's established... why change it?
Never muched liked the Sempron brand, but Duron... there's one I'd like to see come back (good memories of P3 level performance for peanuts with that one). |

I don't see an option for
"I don't care what the name is as long as it kicks arse"
