Compatible RAM for Intel 845GL

Hi all,

I want to upgrade the the RAM on a desktop I just acquired.

Specs:
Compaq Presario Desktop S3040SE
Intel 845GL motherboard
Pentium 4 2.4GHz
Current memory: 512MB SDRAM DDR (256MB PC2300 @ 142MHz and 256MB PC2700 @ 166MHz)
Max memory: 2GB

What memory speeds will be compatible? PC2700 or PC3200? I'm looking for the cheapest I can find and PC3200 is cheaper than the PC2100 that most memory sites recommend.
Can I only use low density RAM or will high density also work?

Thanks for your help!

That chipset will only work with low density RAM. But speed-wise, it is backward compatible. Just get low-density DDR 3200 RAM and you should do just fine

you can upgrade it upto 1gb using sd ram...
if you want to use ddr1 than you have to remove white colour jumpers that is locatted on the right hand side of the board near the the place where we insert sd ram...after removing this you can insert ddr1 ram in red ports, but remember u cant use sd n ddr1 simultaneously it may harm your motherboard
you can upgrade it upto 1gb n can experience very good speed..
n if possible install network card to improve internet speed....

WTF are you talking about, the thing uses DDR SDRAM, its one kind of memory, not DDR AND SDRAM...

also the board already has onboard Ethernet as well as Dial up so there's no need to buy a network card that isn't going to speed things up anymore than what they have already, unless the onboard ethernet is limited to no more than 10MB/s speeds and they have a cable connection faster than that, but unlikely the onboard can't run more than 10Mb, most are capable of 10 or 100Mb.

only reason to add in a network card would be if the onboard is limited to 10Mb or the thing doesn't work anymore, or if they decided to connect to other PC's in a network with out using a Router or Hub/Switch and still have a connection to Broadband internet.

Product Specifications Compaq Presario S3040SE Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Least you could do before resurrecting a 2+ year old thread is get your info straight before posting it.
