Overclock my Toshiba laptop?

Im in the process of upgrading my laptop a little, just to get to run faster, it doesnt meet my requirements at all, am I'm just tired of waiting for it to catch up. Even as I'm typing this, its taking about half a second for the letter to appear on the screen.

The current specs are:

CPU 1.7 Intel Centrino
512RAM

I intend to get some new RAM this week, a 1 GB stick, so that would total the RAM to 1.5GB.

I also want to do something about the processor, can anything be done?

A 1.6 Centrino is MORE than powerfull enough to keep up with yoru typing... Heck, an 1.6 Celeron wouldn't have a problem. If it's lagging like that, you've got other issues. It isn't the processor.

Sorry, its 1.7Ghz.

Yep, I know its not the processor, but I thought it would contribute to a faster system overall if it was to be overclocked, even a little would help.

Like I said, if you're having issues typing, you need to figure out why it's doing that... Figuring that out is what is going to get you performance, overclocking won't, especially on a laptop which can many times lead to a slower system due to thermal throttling.

About the best you can do is bump up the memory or get a faster spinning hard drive; note that the faster hard drive could also increase heat.

Yep, I'm in the process of bumping up the memory. I don't think I'm going to invest in a faster HD though. My current HD sits under my touchpad, and since my laptop is on all the time, it gets quite difficult to use due to the heat, so I just use the mouse.

I've lauched HijackThis, whats it used for? It the first time I'm using this application. Here are the results I got

Dang, no wonder your computer is slow as hell.

Not only do you have Norton running (which slows it down terribly itself), but you have so many other applications running in the background!

Oh, and you have a few nasty things installed, make sure you removed these as they are malware.
C:\WINDOWS\P1370Mon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P1370Mon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\P1370Mon.exe

After you remove that, do this:
Download Avast - http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe
Download the Norton removal tool - http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039
If you have Windows XP download the Sygate Firewall - http://filehippo.com/download/314ec0...1ca8/download/
Then disconnect your pc from the internet.

Start by deleting anything in Norton's virus chest. Then uninstall Norton in Safe Mode (I am not sure if you can remove it in safemode, if it won't let you remove it in normal mode) with the removal tool.

Then reboot the computer, then install Avast and tell it to run the boot time scan when it asks, then reboot. Then, right before you get to windows it will run the boot scan and check your entire pc for viruses, which may take a while but only needs to be done once. Then once you get back into windows, if you are using XP (Sygate does not work in Vista) install Sygate, then reboot again, then disable the built in windows firewall.

Then you can connect to the internet again. Once you get that far let me know, you have a lot of other crap that can be removed as well to speed things up a lot.

Yeah, all that on 512MB of ram (and probably shared RAM at that) is definatly not going to cut it... Even if you were to OC to 3GHz, you'd likely notice no difference since that isnt your problem.

Nice one EXreaction, so its Norton that the primary problem.

The malware files you specified belong to my Creative Webcam, it's some kind of lauch file, it won't let me delete it.

By the way, I've ordered my 1GB stick, should be getting to me by Tuesday.

I don't mind switching to anything else, but how do I know that other software will do the same job as Norton? No doubt it uses up alot of system resources, but it does a good job, doesn't it? - I haven't had any security kind of security breach since its install.

But you what, I'll give it a shot anyway, all for the intention of restoring my laptop's original speed.

RamonGTP, I know now at this stage that OC'ing isn't the solution. Though, I wouldn't mind considering it, even if it was going to do very little to the performance of my laptop (after the improvements ofcourse).

After installing a total of 1.5GB and cleaning up the system, bumping the speed of a 1.7GHz to a 1.8GHz or even 2.0GHz, wouldn't hurt, would it? Anyway, let get the first bit out the way, then we'll talk OC'ing.
