for starters, I'd scrap the 500Gb drive and get 2 x 250Gb and put that on raid 0, will be that much faster.
I would get a somewhat more powerfull PSU, something along the lines of 600W

Hes got a raptor for speed...
The 500 is storage the way it should be...
As for power...
What place are you buying from...
I doubt thats your best power supply option.. |

I know he has a raptor, but could be that 2 x 250Gb will be cheaper then 1 x 500Gb, and if so, it would be cheaper and faster. |

I dont get it...
You dont need speed for a storage drive
The raptor will have all programs, and the windows install on it...
The minimal difference in speed gained isnt worth having only half the space... and if a drive crashes he loses everything...
Wich is exactly what you dont want |

I kind of assumed he would also like to play a game or 2, and I don't know if he's gonna install that on the raptor or not.
And about the loosing data, that goes the same for the 500Gb drive, only difference would be that with the 2 x 250, you'd still have another drive left.
Most motherboards nowadays come with a truckload of sata connectors + still some ide's, so half the space isn't really going anywhere, as I don't see him using all 8 sata connections and still need more room. |

I heard those 10,000 RPM hard drive produce a lot of heat.
RAID 1 could be an option.
Why do people think they need 320MB of video memory?
My bro has an Asus mother board and had nothing, but trouble with it. Very picky on the RAM. Bought a gigabyte and works flawlessly. |

I meant have half the space...
2 250's means a total of 250 available in Raid 0, not 500
And having 2 drives means twice the chance a drive fails...
and I doudt he's going to come anywhere near even 60 gigs worth of software installs and games...
You ALWAYS install games on the faster boot drive...
Faster loads of maps, big games, levels etc... |

Faster loads of maps, big games, levels etc... | 1st of all, I think you have raid 1 and 0 mixed up, raid 1 is mirroring, raid 0 is striping, 2 x 250Gb on raid 0 is a 500Gb(little less) raid array.
If ya look at todays games, more and more taking over 5Gb of install......It'd take a while, but I go over 60Gb in games alone, so.... and I do install those on a different partition then my OS and programs, but that's me, am not saying everyone does that.
I have 1 big raid 0 array, devided up into a few partitions, boot is about 20Gb, then games 100Gb and the rest for normal data, works just fine, load times are really nice.
And I wonder what is faster, 2 SATA2 drives on raid 0, or 1 SATA drive, with a little higher rpm and better seek and load times.
Anyways, it's up to the user. |

Everything looks compatible.
If you get a DVD Burner, get a Sata.
That mobo only has 1 IDE connection.
That power supply should be enough. Triple 12V rails, 50A combined.
Your motherboard supports a Memory Standard: DDR2 1066.
If you have the money, pick up 2GB of this DDR2 1066 Crucial.160$
Otherwise, 2GB DDR2 800 will be fine.90$ |
