how backwards compatible is RAM
can i put pc133 ddr in a pc3200 machine? i have an old pc with 256mb pc133 and i want to add it to my dell dimension 2400n. will it work?

No. PC-133 is the old SDRAM. Two generations older than your system.
You can use PC3200 or faster DDR. Crucial says:

The Dimension 2400 is a nice cheap machine that buyers generally wish they had passed on for a more upgradeable model.
