| Need advice for Heat sink
Im going to a computer show this weekend and was planning on buying a new heatsink for my pentum III 1GHz. I bought it reatail with the retail HSF but i have heard that they stink and I would be better buying it separate. So my question is what heatsink would you recomend? |

52 is pretty high for a PIII. But then again, PIII's probably come with very small retail sinks anyways. Almost anything name brand should be better. Just bring your old one along, so you can compare the size. Might also want to measure teh distance from your capacitors to your socked as well. Nothign like buying a heatsink that wont fit due to capacitors.

The whole stock hsf thing is for AMD's. Intel's do ok with the regular hsf, but personally I'd replace the thermal pad with AS-II/III.
Sometimes the fans wear out. Do you have an RPM checker?

Yah. Switching to some AS will help a lot. Really though you don't need to worry about the P3. It's a very tuff chip. I've had a P3 600 (slot 1) for about 2 years now. In that time it's come partly dislodged from its socket. One half was in one out. I tried powering the PC up a couple of times, and once I found the prob I started up fine. I've used some weird heatsink it's whole life with the silicon pad. Not a prob. They are tuff. Intel = Tank. Not the fastest, but tuff. |

Just a tip
From what Ive seen from North Jersey Comp shows (assuming thats the area you go to, secifically Marketpro and Computershow's and KGP's shows in the Meadowlands, Fairfield, etc.) They normally dont have much as far as good heatsinks go. Last time I went, they were showcasing the SuperOrb as the premier best heatsink with two fans. You won't find any Alphas or anything that. If it retails for more than $20 w/ fan, probably wont find it at a comp show in this area.
I dont know if they've changed, since I havent been there since pre AthlonXP, but Ive been to them since the Pentium II got introduced and it hasnt changed since then. |
