| To quad or not to quad? That is my question
I was looking at the charts between the Duo 6600 and the Quad 6600 and there was hardly any difference in between them?
I will be upgrading from a AMD 64 3000+ so either way, it will be a upgrade.... Is it worth to spend the extra money for the Quad or should I just buy the DUO?
All I have to buy is a motherboard and cpu, I just bought 4GB of DDR2 800 (PC6400) at newegg for $84.99 shipped(sweet deal).
Forgot to add, that I will be using this for audio and video editing, and some gaming.
So should I quad?

A Quad is never a bad idea if you have the budget. That's some major future proofing.
But if your gonna go for a Core 2, then go for the E6750. It's cheaper then the E6600, and is faster at stock speeds.
But the other thing you should think about is more Intel 45mm cores will be coming out in Jan., and when that happens the prices will drop on most of the chips. So if your patient, you may be able to get a steal on a Quad.
Good luck! |

Well I don't play on buying everything all at once, so I think I can wait till Jan, I've waited this far right? |

If you buy a motherboard now, by Jan the same board will be cheaper. Or a better board could be had at the price you are paying now. The same goes with just about anything else. Thats the catch 22 of dealing with technology

Oh I know that, but I haven't bought the motherboard or CPU, I'll keep my eye on the quad core, checking if it is cheaper.
I completely agree with you on with dealing technology, so one can't complain if a month later its cheaper, just have to understand thats how it is.
But if the 45nm cores are coming out Jan, usually new technology, makes somewhat "older" technology cheaper, usually the case. I've read that the 45's will be out the 6th of Jan

i agree going for a quad might be a good idea, but as karma said, wait till the new chips come out, and you are liable to get a steal on a quad...
i think that unfortunately, most of what people are going to say is right...if you buy some parts now, then in the short term they are always going to be cheaper...but that's how technology is.
you can wait for 2 months, knowing that the price is going to come down, or bite the bullet, buy now, and when you see the price inevitably drop in 2 months, you will know that that's 2 months that you wouldn't have had the motherboard for (or any other part for that matter).
however, exciting technology is still around in the for of older parts. i recently sold my fairly up-to-date gaming rig, and decided that with the upgrade i'm doing on my secondary PC, all that horsepower isn't necessary (granted, my interests have moved away from gaming and are leaning more towards photography).
i am going to get an absolute steal on a dual core amd chip, possibly an x2 4000+. throw 2gb of ddr2-667 value ram in there, and i've already got a 7600gt. makes for a solid rig.
don't ever feel as though you have to have the most up to date equipment, because realistically, that never happens, and you will be forever disappointed.
to be brutally honest a quad core still is, really, overkill (IMO). a good solid dual core can still perform very well for most everyday and even slightly more hardcore users. same deal with video cards, ram, etc etc. Quote: |
But if your gonna go for a Core 2, then go for the E6750. | my old cpu. insane value for money, no real need for overclocking, highly recommended.
hope this helps, or at least gives you an insight into a few things.
regards,
ryan |
