HELP..pc2 5300 on pc2 4200 laptop

I pulled the 512mb pc2 4200 that the toshiba a105-s1013 came with and put in a 1gb 5300 and it does not work in either slots...but when i put the 4200 back in along with the 5300, they both work. Is there any way to make the 1gb to run by itself? I actually have (2) 1gb sticks i am hoping to use.

One set of RAM may be backwards compatible and running at 4200.

Have you tried BOTH of the 5300's individually along with the 4200?

Sounds to me like the BIOS won't underclock the 5300 when there's not slower stick to match.

Can you even get into the BIOS? I know many laptop BIOS are useless for anything other than boot sequence and some other non-adjustable info, so you might be skru'd. :/
