| Differences in Intel Cores
So i'm getting ready to build my next computer but it has been four or five years since i built this one and frankly, I am getting confused with all the new processors Intel has released. I see specs for the processors and I wonder if having a 45nm vs 65 nm is really a big difference?
This is going to go in a shuttle barebones box most likely so i guess thermally speaking i need something that is efficient and cool without needing a huge heat sink. I have no plans to OC this either.
These are the two i was looking at just recently. Im wondering if the slightly lower CPU speed is going to be made up for in FSB and the extra meg of L2 cache?
I saw they just released this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115052
E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz
L2 Cach 3MB
FSB 1066MHz
Manufacturing Tech 45 nm
For 131
Or this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115045
E4700 2.6GHz Allendale
FSB 800MHz
L2 Cache 2MB
Manufacturing Tech 65 nm
For 139 |

If your not going to oc, and considering your going with a shuttle for a case. I would go with the 7200, less power consumption, higher fsb, and more cache, and cheaper. |

45nm cores use less power, which = less heat.
And they are faster clock for clock then 65nm cores. |

Definitely go with the new 45nm. I don't know what the exact difference will be, but I know going from 2 to 4MB caches on the old 65nm cores was an average of 10% performance increase.

I think you should change your mind about OC but that's me.

E7200 are suppose to be pretty nice. OC nicely too, if you ever did decide to do it.
If you KNOW you won't OC, i'd go with an E8400

I'd go for the 7200, for the less Power that is consumed.
Not to mention it will be far easier to cool. |

If you KNOW you won't OC, i'd go with an E8400 | I did alot of reading since my post. Now i really dont know what i want to do. The E7200 is looking good for a budget but for another 70 bucks i can get the E8400. I guess im gonna have to see how much money i have to play with. Atleast the video card is already bought so i dont have to worry about that.
As for OC'ing ive never been a fan because ive never needed to reach a peak perfomance. Im playing AoC right now with under 10fps so if i can bump it upto 30 i would be happy. Anything more then that and its just overkill to me. |

I OC a E2180 to 2.7. For $80, can't go wrong. |
