| Recommend CPU temp-monitor software?
I have two PCs (a desktop and a laptop) that I've fiddled with lately (cleaning, mainly), and the desktop is having these random crashes that I was attributing to XP SP3, while the laptop seems to be running the fan at highest speed a lot more than I recall it used to.
So for both PCs, I'm wondering if perhaps my issue is that the CPUs are running too hot, and before I go doing anything drastic to either one, I wonder if there's any reliable freeware/shareware out there that can give me a good idea of whether CPU temp is an issue.
The laptop is an HP CTO dv4000, with a Pentium-M @ 1.73 GHz, and the desktop is an ancient P-4 @ 2.2 GHz. I downloaded a program from a link on these boards, but it works only for newer (multi-core?) processors. I found CPUCool, but it was beyond my abilities to figure out (I can't find out the mobo in the laptop, among other things), and I tried SensorsViewPro 3.1, but it didn't seem to have any way to measure the CPU temp (gave me HDD temp, but that's not my concern).
Any recommendations? |

hi. i'm currently using a program called core temp. it's freeware andit's very simple to use. it's not entirely accurate as it gets the temperature readings from a chip on the motherboard. if you wanted accurate readings you would need to buy temperature sensors for your pc. that would explan the problem you had with that program not being able to take a temp reading. but coretemp is a decent program. |

| Core Temp
You shouldn't be afraid of Google, just be careful what you click on, you can see the link below the description, if it looks correct it usually is. My keywords for the above search was "download core temp" and it was the first link.
I can also second that program, I use it on my laptop now and it runs pretty well

I would stick with the link that I posted since it was the developers site and if an update was released for the program, then I would hope all other mirror sites would get it, but I am sure their site would get it first and foremost. |

Yeah, blackwidow's link is exactly what I'm talking about. Looking for this stuff, I've seen some VERY sketchy-looking sites, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.
And, crap. CoreTemp doesn't support P4s.
Guess I'll just have to open up the box and feel around to find out if it's too hot. |
