Recommend CPU temp-monitor software?
I have two PCs (a desktop and a laptop) that I've fiddled with lately (cleaning, mainly), and the desktop is having these random crashes that I was attributing to XP SP3, while the laptop seems to be running the fan at highest speed a lot more than I recall it used to.
So for both PCs, I'm wondering if perhaps my issue is that the CPUs are running too hot, and before I go doing anything drastic to either one, I wonder if there's any reliable freeware/shareware out there that can give me a good idea of whether CPU temp is an issue.
The laptop is an HP CTO dv4000, with a Pentium-M @ 1.73 GHz, and the desktop is an ancient P-4 @ 2.2 GHz. I downloaded a program from a link on these boards, but it works only for newer (multi-core?) processors. I found CPUCool, but it was beyond my abilities to figure out (I can't find out the mobo in the laptop, among other things), and I tried SensorsViewPro 3.1, but it didn't seem to have any way to measure the CPU temp (gave me HDD temp, but that's not my concern).
Any recommendations?AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE (OC @ 3.1 GHz on stock cooling) || ASUS M4A78T-E AM3

hi. i'm currently using a program called core temp. it's freeware andit's very simple to use. it's not entirely accurate as it gets the temperature readings from a chip on the motherboard. if you wanted accurate readings you would need to buy temperature sensors for your pc. that would explan the problem you had with that program not being able to take a temp reading. but coretemp is a decent program.

Core Temp
You shouldn't be afraid of Google, just be careful what you click on, you can see the link below the description, if it looks correct it usually is. My keywords for the above search was "download core temp" and it was the first link.
I can also second that program, I use it on my laptop now and it runs pretty well

I would stick with the link that I posted since it was the developers site and if an update was released for the program, then I would hope all other mirror sites would get it, but I am sure their site would get it first and foremost.

Yeah, blackwidow's link is exactly what I'm talking about. Looking for this stuff, I've seen some VERY sketchy-looking sites, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.
And, crap. CoreTemp doesn't support P4s.
Guess I'll just have to open up the box and feel around to find out if it's too hot.AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE (OC @ 3.1 GHz on stock cooling) || ASUS M4A78T-E AM3

CPU Temps ???????
Ok her is my delema ... Just got my Phenom X4 II 940 CPU and am watching CPU temps ... the MB I bought to go with it is a Biostar 790GX 120m ... Biostar gives you software to monitor the MB including CPU temps well also on the CD included with the MB is the Amd Overdrive utility ... Ok so here is where I am having issues ... the Biostar software is stating the CPU temp is at max temp under full load 38-39C but the ATI Overdrive is saying the CPU is at 48-49C ... which one do I believe ... I dont want to dmg my CPU when I start OC and I want to know which one is more accurate ... any input????

If that dosent help just assume its the highest results. That way If it turns out to be wrong well atleast it was cooler than you thought. Close to 50c under full load sounds about right if on stock heatsink.

tried suggested links
ive tried the everest and core temp..my virus program (avg ) says its a threat and wont let me proceed to download it. why cant there be just a simple little gadget that tells me what the temp of my cpu is..it gets really hot, and i get notifications all the time that i have a high cpu usage, but im just running google chrome, not running anything major. also it gets super slow. i took the back off and took a can of air to it, thinking it might just be dusty, but that doesnt seem to have helped..

there is a simple tool you listed them, everest and core temp, tell your AV to ignore them, they are not viruses...
at least not if your downloading from proper sites or sources.
Everest: |MG| EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 Download
Core temp: Core Temp
how do you know your CPU temp gets hot, if you don't have a way of telling what the temps are?
what your describing about high CPU usage, slow browser or slow PC, doesn't sound like temp issues at all, sounds more like Spyware, Adware, Malware, possibly a Virus, etc.
AVG should be letting you download Core temp at least, I run Avira instead of AVG, and it never questions downloads from Geeks, or other sites, so either you have your security settings set way too high and strict, or its possible something else is going on with your system.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

I've always felt there was a "legal bubble" developing. The government is running trials up into the millions of dollars just the keep federal lawyers busy.
