Hi, d011380:
I assume you've done the usual XP stuff:
1. Remove unneeded programs/processes from startup.
2. Kept your drive defragged.
3. Ditched any resource-hogging security software, like McAfee and Norton.
4. Checked for malware?
Another common problem is the hard drive running in PIO mode. You can check this on the advanced tab of IDE primary channel properties in device manager.
A more obscure problem that's been reported is a defective thermal sensor, causing the CPU to ramp down. You can test this using the diagnostics (F12 on start-up, utility partition, custom test). If you get a failure, then updating to this BIOS version may fix the problem. |
