| as far as I'm concerned the only impressive part of either article was this Quote: |
AMD did show air-cooled systems running at around 4GHz (~1.6V)though

The Phenom reached 4Ghz at 1.55V and needed 1.6 to go well over it.
And even so, 1.55V isn't all that high, nowhere it is stated what it's default voltage is, and it is coming from 2.8 or 3.0Ghz default, so I think this is a really good step in the good direction.
It shows for 1 that this chip has a lotta potential, it won't be limited to 3.4Ghz.

I won't get excited until I see what it can do on air, not LN2.

it also stated what it did on air.....it reached 4Ghz AMD Sneak Peeks Phenom II, Overclocks To 5+GHz - HotHardware Quote:
What was perhaps most impressive was AMD’s demonstration of the product and their overclocking prowess with the chip. On display were several machines setup to overclock with everything from standard air cooling to water, phase change refrigeration and finally Liquid Nitrogen. On air, the Phenom II X4 was able to hit around 4GHz at 1.55V with 32ºC temps. With water cooling at 1.6V the new Phenom II X4 broke 4GHz with a 39ºC core temp and in a Vapochill setup we saw 4.4+GHz. The final icing on the cake, so to speak, was the LN2 setup where the Phenom II ran stable at speeds well in excess of 5GHz and booted at speeds in excess of 6GHz. |

Well the chips tested were engineering samples, not retail chips and the release is slated for sometime around Jan. so I wouldn't expect much until then. |

you would think that less than 2 months to go, we would see something more concrete by now, even the AM2+ version of the Phenom II would be really nice. |

When was the last time a really kickarse producted remained quiet until release? Didn't happen with the original Athlon64 and didn't happen with Core2.
I have no doubt it will be better than the original Phenom, but who really cares about that. It's a new product and is expected to be better. The real question is, will AMD be able to compete with Intel on something other than a price war? |
