Intel is planning to start phasing out the 65nm Core 2 Quad Q6600 in the first quarter of 2009, prompting several PC and channel vendors to start planning to cut Q6600-product prices to clear their inventory before the end of this year, according to sources at PC vendors.
Intel will issue a product discontinuance notice for the Q6600 in the first quarter next year, and call end-of-lifecycle in the second quarter.

If there was a CPU Hall of Fame, the Q6600 would surely be inducted.

Agreed! (that's a first GTP )
What an amazing chip; that and the Dual Cores put Intel way over the top of AMD, IMO.
Now, albeit expensive for now, the i7 is out. Fun times for us enthusiasts for sure! |

I have loved my Kentsfield more then any other CPU I've ever had. It's actually the first CPU I've had that I didn't want to upgrade.
This is a sad day for us geeks.. |

I just wonder how low we'll see them go. I really don't think they'll have to drop the prices that much to move them out. But wow a Q6600 at around $125 would be nice!! Realistically I figure $150 and you'd see them flying out the door. |

I've seen them on forums go as low as $130 now. (1.3215VID)
The good VID chips bring~$170-$180 still.. |

You know now that you mention it, I've seen some floating around for cheap. But I mean
I'm wondering how low they will go straight from the retailers. And I forgot that back in labor day Fry's had that awesome deal where they were about $150 with a cheapo board. |

I'm just wondering why they are doing this...wouldn't they want to phase out the lower tier of the dual core line? |

The Q6600 is the oldest quad core. It's one of few 65nm processors still prodced and it along with the Q6700 are the only 65nm quads. |
