ok this might seem like a dumb question but it needs to be answered for me, my brothers computer is going out and he has an old socket 939 asus a8n-sli deluxe which says it can work with 64 x2 processors, but all the x2 processors i can find say that they are socket am2, so as far as i can tell it wont work with a 939 board. all i need to know is if it can or cant.

Socket AM2 processors will not work on socket 939 motherboards. Socket AM2 CPU's have 940 pins and the pin layout is different.

+1 on what AR said, and yes they made Athlon 64 x2 cpus in socket 939. They were discontinued awhile back and are hard to find but they are out there. Running one right now in fact,

Athlon 64 X2's & also some AMD Opteron Dual cores also (Opteron 165 was a well known one, mainly due to many of them being so overclockable they were favorites with Overclockers), for Socket 939 platform, & yes they are hard to find. I used to have an X2 4200+ CPU on my old 939 system.
Luckily I have a connection who's got his old Opty 165 unused collecting dust right now, & will come in handy with my brothers friends old Socket 939 board that I'm getting as part of his upgrades. |
