Ok so this is really making me mad. I got a 2 gb ram stick for my laptop for christmas to add to my current 2. its been working fine. I started up darwin bootloader showed 4096mb and windows vista x64 detected all 4. Just today i was using virtual pc and i noticed that i couldnt move my ram share up to 2gb, so i opened task manager and it was registering total as 3. system properties still shows 4.00 gb. Bios shows 4096 but darwin now shows 3070... i've tried reflashing the bios and nothing. Every OS i have shows 4 in system but only 3 total. Memtest shows me at 3 help plz

Ok
Not 100% sure but i dont think vista can use more than 3 anyway. there should be patches available one the internet for this problem.
I know this was a problem in XP as well. where it only used 2GB and after patching it it used 3GB.
Did you only refresh the bios on flash it, this can also be a problem on older computers, try flashing your bios to the newest version
PS if your up for it try using a linux live-cd, you'll be able to see the amount recognized by your bios and be able to see whether the problem is within the bios or the os.
hope this helps! |

Reason: Sorry - ignore it. This seems to be irrelevant :)

ALL 32bit OS's will handle a total of 4GB of memory;this includes on chip memory, video card memory, and finally your actual RAM. This is not something designed into Vista or XP, this is a limitation of 32bit operating systems inability to map memory beyond a certain numerical number ... 4GB.
Now, you should really be looking at the restrictions of Virtual PC because THAT is where your problem is. If your Bios and real install of Vista are registering 4gb but your Virtual PC install of something isnt, then you probably are not running a 64bit OS in Virtual PC. You really need to check what OS you are running virtually before you start flashing or updating things without needing those updates.
So, what OS are you running in VPC? |

u misunderstand me. Vista x64 (host) is only utilizing 3 when it should be using 4. Nothing to do to to with vpc that's just when I noticed it.

Huh again ... Not sure then. The only thing i can think of is that your Mobo doesnt support more than 3gigs but that wouldnt explain why your OS and BIOS is registering 4GB.
I would almost say call HP and see if this is a known issue with you laptop. |
