| Upgrading Processor on a Gateway GT5220
Right now there is a AMD Anthlon X2 3800+ at 2.01 GHZ. I want to put an Anthlon X2 6400+ in it. I am afraid to try replacing the 3800+ because of fear that the motherboard will damage the 6400+. I've been searching and I haven't heard anywhere that you can or cannot upgrade the processor. I mean what could be the worst that could happen if the board isn't compatible?
Heres the specs Gateway GT5220 Ram Confusion
I finally did get the best ram for it which its best speeds is DDR2 @ 667mhz, a new Corsair 450w PSU and a 9600GT for it. Now what about the procesor, hmm.. can it be upgraded?

Neither BIOS nor Windows recognizes name of CPU, But proper speed shows up and task manager shows dual cores. I'm running a little faster, but I think I'm dragged way down by the onboard video. One thing to remember is that this computer has a wierd heatsink with no fan. CPU upgrade no problem - Cooling BIG problem. I'd be afraid to run a 125w CPU with this setup. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the help and tips. Looks like we both need to figure out a way to cool it better then. Its just that the space inside the case is so cramped. Any ideas on cooling before I add the 5800+ to my shopping cart?
I'm horrible with AMD chipset motherboards LOL

Hey guys. I found this thread through a Google search. Nevertheless, I am in the same situation ( wanting to upgrade the processor in my GT5220 ) I'm curious to know if you guys ever found a cure for the cooling? I am also worried about the voltage demand of a faster processor I do not think the BIOS in the GT5220 allows one to turn the voltage up. I would appreciate any info on this issue, and how has it worked out for you two.
Thanks in advance |

I upgraded my power supply to a 650w modular unit. The fan on it has variable speed. I also changed all the ide cables to round. KEEP THE AIRFLOW FUNNEL OVER THE HEATSINK. Stays fairly cool, only runs hot when doing alot of apps at once. The only way I could seem to overclock was using ntune by Nvidia. Didn't seem to help much. I am happy with the new processor. It runs much faster than before. |

Ok thanks for the info. Would you happen to know if I can install an AM2 socket retention plate on to this motherboard that came with the Gateway Gt5220? I was thinking about installing one of those and using the heat sync/fan the processor came with.
Thanks again for the response. |
