| HS/fan for 750 Duron@1000
I read the previous thread by BRINET and would like to use the Volcano 7 for an oc'd 750 Duron. (Will it work for a Duron also?)
I'd like to get it up to around 1Ghz, so efficient cooling will definately be a factor.
I plan on 2 Case fans min. to keep the ambient temp down in a customized ATX case.
The mobo is a K7S5A Low Cost is very important
Thanks for any info that you can share.

Fret not as to the question, in question, this High and Holy member has forgotten much more than I, Dr. ItchyBod R. Cranium IX, will ever know )
Ahh, on to the answer to the riddle.
Yes the Volcano 7 will work on a Duron, just check the flatness of the copper slug to asertain if the process of pressing it into place has caused a indention. It needs to sit as flat as possible if you plan to O/C
Welcome Ol Wise One, welcome to our humble abode.

It will work fine. I'm a bit skeptical if you are going to increase the performance of the Duron by 1/3rd with this 'budget' model performance heatsink. You might want to look for something in a higher range.
Check out the Arkura 6128. It's $19 shipped at Newegg, and performs better then the Volcano 7, which is $25 shipped from Newegg.
Check out the same article I posted over on Brinet's thread. They even used Duron for their testing. |

Dang ... the ARKUA TECHNOLOGY 6128 is out of stock @ Newegg right now, hopefully this is a temporary thing.
Ya never know about the fan (I've had a lot of fans die on me), but the heatsink seems to be right up there with the best of 'em, I'll have to check out those specs. again. The price is right and I think I'll go ahead and get one if I can find one. Thanx Phynix |

The Vantec CCK 6027 is available at Newegg for $18 plus shipping. Very nice, solid copper HSF. I use it on an overclocked XP 1800+. Cools well and not overly loud.
HardOCP had a big HSF roundup (can't seem to find it now), where they lined up a bunch of them in columns comparing noise vs. cooling. It fell pretty much toward the middle of both columns, so it offers a good combination. Very reasonably priced, too, IMO. |

Is this the one Thud ? http://www.hardocp.com/reviews.html?cat=NQ==
They have 8 HeatSink roundups listed at this link.
Mikey, it is listed as a usable HS for the 1800, however the Retail HS's included with the XP's and Athlons are pure garbage.. They work ok with the Duron 1.0ghz CPU but for the others, forget it.
The very cheapest usable HS I've used personally is the Thermaltake Volcano 5, reviews show it to be some 4-5 degrees warmer than the upper end units @ 48C on the testbed unit reviewed.
I've tried several units, Volcano 5, 6cu, 6cu+, 7 and see little difference.
Granted c:::HNsaw is planning a heavy O/C, he may need more serious cooling. |
