Good CPU

Can someone explain me how you know if a cpu is good?I don't understand cpu, ram is easy more GB = better but sometime a 2.4ghz cpu is better than a 3.0ghz cpu. I don't understand and i want to buy a good cpu.

The clock speed is really the second thing you should look at, the first is the cpu model I.E. Pentium, athlon, phenom, core 2, I7 etc.

an older chip say a Pentium 4 running at 3.6Ghz is nothing compared to a core 2 duo at 3.0Ghz

Clock speeds are only relevent in the same family core 2 duo 2.4Ghz vs core 2 duo 3.0ghz, that is when you can start comparing speeds.

Could go into more detail but that is very brief/basic reason/summary.

Then there are core designs which i can't help much with cause I've alwys paid attention to the series rather than the core.
