| Intel 1.6A, Duron or Thoroughbred?
I want to build a fairly inexpensive, but fairly good machine. I also want it fairly quiet and fairly cool. I guess I'm a fair guy, huh?
It's for a smaller office and I don't want it to heat up too much or be too loud.
Trying to decide between 3 options:
1. 1.1 Ghz Duron with ecs mobo. This would be cheap. $100
2. 1.6A Pentium and overclock to 2.1 Gz. Expensive but good. $230 for chip and mobo
3. Wait for the Thoroughbred. Not sure what pricing would be. This should run cool and overclock.
Any thoughts? |

I chose the 1.6A because I have one now, and really happy with the performance. I like the stability and you can "futureproof" yourself with the SSE2 codes. Also, the 1.6A is quiet and cool, like what your specs are.. The 1.6A would run real nice if you went to mwave.com and bought the I850 chipset because they are really chip, or you can buy a refurb like my uncle did from newegg.com |

For price/performance combo you can`t beat the Duron ...
Another vote for the Duron chip ... |

Looks like I'm out numbered here, but I'm an avid Thoroughbred man.
About half the price of the Pentium chip, and boosted performance the smokes it without needing the overclock.
You are right in the fact that it will run much cooler, making overclocking easier and better. Best of all, this will only add bonus points.

for a buisness, i dont see the need beyond a 1.1 duron. The pentium would be nice, but itll have alot of power that will never be used.
My 2 cents |

Definitely the Duron. The price is right, the performance is great, etc.!

While I voted Tbred, I think that you want the duron. Pound for pound and dollar for dollar it's the clear winner here.

Both Intel and AMD just dropped their CPU prices again. Today NewEgg (just for instance, though I do like them) was offering the Athlon XP1800+, retail version, for $106 US: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...ry=1028&DEPA=1
The OEM version is going for $94.
My personal preference is for AMD, even though I don't overclock. |

If its for a small office, and not doing heavy tasks like lots of graphics, then go for the Duron. Save the money and buy a bigger hard drive, or a bigger monitor, or something that you will see completely tangible benefits from (if in fact you are buying the whole system). Otherwise, ThB
