| Trying to OC E7200 as much as possible
Hi. Im new to overclocking. Im trying to get a E7200 which runs at 2.55ghz stock to at least 3.6. Ive seen people being able to get it up to 4ghz stable. Right now I've got it up to about 3.2ghz (9.5x340.1) Not exactly Prime95 stable yet. Ive got the voltage at 1.39. CPUtemp is 45 according to FoxOne and 53 according to Real Temp. Usually FoxOne is closest to BIOS. I loosened my ram timings as much as possible except for tRAS and tRC which can be loosened quite a bit more. My timings are:
CAS#latency 6
RAS to CAS 4
tRP 7
tRAS 18
tRC24
CR 2T
DRAM Freq 318.8 (i'm running 800ram at 667mhz)
My system:
Foxconn mobo MCP73M05
E7200 cpu 2.55ghz @ 3.21ghz
Crucial PC2-6400 DDR2 2X2gb
Antec Earthwatts 500w psu
Masscool cpu cooler
Thermaltake SopranoRS case with 4 120mm fans
Nvidia GeForce 9800gt vga
running Win XP home
Thanks |

Hi and welcome to TechIMO.
I googled you motherboard, because I've never even heard of it before, and there are a slew of posts with people in the exact same spot. So I'm guessing your at your board limit.
If you could gather up $50-$75 you could probably pick up a P35/P45 board that would get you MUCH better results.
Also wanted to note, that you have a 45nm chip, and the voltage limit for those is 1.3625v, so technically your over-volting your CPU. Which that WILL damage your chip. Just a heads up. |

Thanks! | IMO you are not going to need 2 PCIe slots. Really, its much easier to stick in a new card when your current one is no good anymore. Besides, you are going to have to spend a lot more on the board to get one with decent crossfire performance anyways (the older Intel boards only support ATI multi-GPU configs).
As for DDR3, well, all I can say is forget it. Get it for your next system. There are a lot more cost effective ways to boost performance. Besides, DDR3 ATM doesnt really provide any real tangible benefits like spending $50 more on a CPU would

I looked at that board before, but it seems like people are having a hard time with it. It may just be them. Whats the difference between p31 and p35? Yeah with the dual PCIe thing I would also have to spend another $100+ to get another 9800gt which I am in no position to do! I probably will get some better ddr2 if I can find a good deal on it. Well thanks a lot!
BTW with the fsb at 333 and voltage at 1.3 I'm getting 8.4 hours stable with p95. My mem timings are tight. I'm going by the suggested timings in cpuz for 333mhz. Which should I loosen with minimal loss in performance memory wise? My cpu is running at 3.16ghz right now. Thanks again. |

Personally, I don't think an extra 400MHz is worth spending money or the time to change boards and quite possibly an OS reinstallation.

You know what? Mem timings hardly make any difference to performance. 100Mhz on your CPU is going to more than make up for your looser memory timings. Doesnt your board allow you to set your memory at a lower speed? You can set it to 667Mhz, for example, and that will give you more space to OC your CPU. If not your going to have to increase the voltages on the ram. If not its really your board thats holding you back.
as for the differences between P31 and P35, its basically more lanes on the PCIe bus (to crossfire) and slightly better OC abilities. Its not much.
Actally, forget that P31 board. Just get this. Newegg.com - Open Box: GIGABYTE GA-EP43-UD3L LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard
Its going to be an awesome OC board. Itl beat the crap outta that P31 board.
Its basically this Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP43-UD3L LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
Just that its an open box version (which as the name suggests, has been opened before) but returned and saves you quite a bit of money
