Are you overclocking?

More info is needed... Do you have the manual?

Did you just install the CPU or reset the CMOS?

Hit "delete" as your machine is booting (after a restart) to get into the BIOS setup and find the section that pertains to your CPU and FSB speed and set it to the speed of your CPU.

Good Luck!

it is set to auto. And the clock is 133. Would you happen to know what i need to be at? by the way, i didn't do neither install the cpu or reset the ram. What if i go to optimized defaults. Would that fix it maybe?

Thanks

Sure, that's actually a good test... if you load "safe" or "optimized" defaults and you still have the problem then you know there's some other problem. Hopefully it works though

UPDATE:

I just went back to optimized default, and it worked now.

Thanks JohnE. for the help. I would have never thought about going to the bios if you hadn't suggested it.

Thanks and can you help with one more thing please maybe?

I get another message that says Primary IDE Channel no 80 conductur cable installed. it then still goes. is this saying that it is installed. or not installed. Thanks for any help and also for the help before JohnE.

Thanks
kruseman

Is this a brand-new machine? Assuming it is (or at least has a relatively new hard-drive), most newer computers come with hard-drives that are at least ATA/UDMA 66 or higher. If this is the case you will need an 80 pin hard-drive cable as opposed to the older 40 pin cables.

In some cases a UDMA 66 or higher drive will operate with a 40 pin cable but at a much higher degree of risk of data loss or corruption.

I've seen cases where sellers have sold a new computer with fast UDMA drives with old 40 pin cables. You'll have to look at the cable to see if it is 40 or 80 pin and if it is 40 pin, return it to where you bought the computer and have it exchanged free of charge. If they try to charge you extra $ for an 80 pin cable that should have been there in the first place tell them to shove it and then report them to the Better Business Bureau.

well, i built the computer, but it wasn't showing up like it was. it's a pretty old hard drive, but there is also a newer one i'm using as a slave right now. I'm guessing it's that the 120 gb drive needs it. How much does one cost? and where could i get it at?

Thanks for all the help JohnE.
