can that work? desktop ram and desktop gpu be installed together with server cpu? and without any conflicts and problems? can do anything with ease? no need to do special configuration? just plug and go? act as is everything is desktop component? play games with no trouble? no driver issue ect.... ?

Do you have a specific motherboard in mind?

if I'm not mistaken the Opteron 8xxx series is intended to be used with a 4 or 8 socket motherboard, for single or dual CPU use, you should be looking at the 2xxx series CPU's (Especially the 6-Core 2xxx series Opterons Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,CPUs / Processors,Processors - Servers,Socket F,Six-Core ). (the 8380 you mention is only a mere 2.5GHz Quad core CPU also, hardly what i would expect for a build your suggesting), then again its a $1300 CPU too...

as to using Non-ECC RAM, only if the motherboard Supports it.
and as to using 3 GTX 285 (why in gods name you'd want to be using those on a server board anyways, instead of just a single GTX 295 in one slot is beyond me),
but only if the board has 3 Physical Full Length PCI Express x16 slots, and enough clearance room behind the cards.
besides I don't know of too many Server boards that have a configuration like that.
and if your thinking of Running SLI, again, not too many Server boards support SLI either.
most likely you'd end up running each card independent of each other, making it pointless getting 3 cards, unless you planned on running some games that support multi-monitor setups, for 6 displays or so.
also keep in mind a GTX 285 is a dual slot card, and even if a Server board had 3 PCIE x16 slots available, several of the ones I've seen with at least 2, usually have the slots next to one another, so your Shit out of luck running 2 dual slot cards together.
(look at this pic for example, 3x PCIE x16 slots, 2x x8 slots and one auto switching x16 slot, all next to each other, meaning you can only use 2 single slot and one dual slot card at most, Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! )
16GB will be a waste for any gaming setup, as it is now days 4GB is more than enough.
how about give us a specific Breakdown of the specific parts your talking about?
not just bits and pieces.
as others said, list the make/model etc of the motherboard to be used, would be a good start.
edit: also from your lack of know how on your other threads, and lack of listening to suggestions when building your own system, I highly doubt this is a build for your self (especially the budget range a system like this would cost), most likely another hypothetical inquiry or asking for someone else who asked you.Last edited by ShyguyXPC; July 30th, 2009 at 02:50 PM.
