| which CPU class is used most
I have been in an argument with a friend about which CPU is still the most common used CPU today. Do any of you have any idea? I think it is still the Pentium 4. |

hard to say really, but i do know from experience that the p4 has a good resale value on second hand machines, but if you look at oem computer sales for the last 2 years i think intel are in the lead
saying that though there are 3 small computer parts stores in my local area and none of them have a wide range of intel units, they mostly deal in amd which is a bit annoying as i personally prefer intel,
why dont you create a poll asking people to vote on which cpu class they use mostly, it wont be conclusive but you would get some idea

Considering the number of low end machines out on the market, sold at retail stores and even online from Prebuilt manufacturers, I'd say Intels Celerons have a good shot at that title. Which generation Celeron, thats hard to say, but would gather to guess Pentium 3 or Pentium 4 era Celly's.
but good idea on the poll suggestion.

ahh yes the good old celeron, i think it would be fair to call the celeron a class of its own owing to the fact that there are also two gens of p4, the 478/478B socket and the 775 socket, but i suppose it depends on how many possible answers you can suggest in the poll |

I've never heard of socket 478B, unless you're talking about s479 which is Intel's mobile socket that actually only has 478 pins.
My vote would go for the Celery as the most common core in use.

You did not specify a particular architecture, but if we take "class" as meaning architecture, ARM outsells x86 and probably even all other processor architectures added together. ARM licensed 1.6 billion cores in 2005 alone, with the architecture's 10 billion core milestone occurring in 2008.

I would say that it used to be the pentium series but I think the celeron has taken the crown as the most popular cpu class. But AMD's sales have supposedly gone (according to some friends) up for the athlon II so I wouldn't be suprised if the crown changes heads again.
