CPU upgrade

Hi i recent bought this motherboard so i can use my AGP graphics card:

Asrock motherboard 4Core Dual-SATA II LGA775 VIA PT880 PCI-E ATX- microdirect.co.uk

I'm looking for a processor around the £50-£60 mark.

I'm a bit of a noob.

Is all RAM compatible here, i'm using DDR currently, does the MHz of the RAM matter?

Hard drive question: I have an IDE Hard drive, is this compatible?

Also is this a normal sized Mobo? to be sure it fits my case.

Thanks

hmm. its a bit of a waste to get a board like that TBH. if you can return it for seomthing else I recommend that. what graphics card are you using now? and your memory is also not compatible. it is a normal sized board though

why did you just create a new thread asking about upgrading your motherboard? Are you going to upgrade everything or just one or the other?

i'd like to get a different motherboard after reading the above posts.

im using an ATI radeon HD3650 so needs to be AGP

OK it turns out i need a Micro ATX motherboard that supports AGP Graphics cards and Dual Core Processor. Please find me one and a processor to go with it!

you know what? you could build yourself a new computer with modern parts and ditch gimmicky products like ones that support both AGP and PCIe. it might have been of soem use in the past, but nowadays most onboard graphics is going to be as fast/faster than the card you have now.

In reading your other thread here Upgrading Computer it looks like you might have just purchased that gpu, is there any way you can send it back? If not and you are stuck with finding a board that supports DDR and AGP then you are pretty much limited to the board you posted above.

There just aren't many boards made these days that support both agp and ddr. They are old standards that are well past their prime. You could look around ebay or someplace else for a used board.

Absolutely. For about $270 you could have this motherboard with integrated video, this quad-core processor and 4 GB of DDR2 1066. For an even better deal, you could get the same motherboard, an Athlon II dual-core processor,4 GB of DDR2 plus a 500 GB SATA hard drive for $250 in a combo deal.

$205

Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

Newegg.com - WINTEC AMPO 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model 3AMD2800-2G2K-R - Desktop Memory

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

They said they needed a MicroATX board

otherwise for $250 ish,

Newegg.com - ZOTAC GF8200-D-E AM2+/AM3 NVIDIA GeForce 8200 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

CPU should be more powerful than any Dual core available for your old platform

Newegg.com - WINTEC AMPO 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model 3AMD2800-2G2K-R - Desktop Memory

2GB is fine for now, though with the mobo above, only has 2 slots so maybe a 4GB kit would be better, but 2GB is minimal what you need now days, unless running resource Hungry Windows Vista, if XP or Windows 7, 2GB should get you by fine.

Newegg.com - OCZ StealthXStream OCZ400SXS 400W ATX12V Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

assuming your PC case can take a regular full size ATX Power Supply

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100295HDMI Radeon HD 4670 512MB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Radeon 4670 essentially replaces the old 3800 series cards, similar specs, but next generation newer from what you have now.

almost everything here is free shipping... with the exception of the video card, a radeon 4670 with free shipping cost almost $10 more, and shipping is only $6 something for the card above.

just under $255 total, not including $35 in mail in rebates.

well those are just examples, to show what can be had for relatively cheap, rather than dumping more money into a platform thats harder and harder to keep up to date.

the only UK site I know fairly well is OCuk (Overclockers UK)

but just an example, comes out to more than what it costs in US, but may just be the one source.

some products are out of stock, but just to show for example

GPU (Radeon 4670) Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Motherboard (similar/same one from above, not the Zotac, but the Gigabyte board) Gigabyte GA-M85M-US2H GeForce 8200 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

CPU (Same AMD above) AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 240 2.80GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail

PSU (similar one above, but modular) OCZ ModXStream Pro 400w Silent SLI Ready Modular Power Supply

RAM (2GB DDR2 800MHz) Kingston HyperX 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel (KHX6400D2LLK2/2G)

comes to 227, 197.39 ex VAT.

just to give you an idea of costs.
