Hi people i went out with the gf today and came across what i thaught at the time to be an awesome offer
my pc at the time had the intel e2140 installed and it wasnt overclocked at all
but i wanted an upgrade to make dvd decoding faster
and so when i saw a 3.2 ghz dual core for 28 pound i nearly ofered the guy more then poped into maplins and baught myself some arctic ice thermal compound
came home installed it it and voila worked (but i noticed it took nearly twice as long to start windows)
putting this aside i decided to check my temperatures and my cpu is idling around 40-50
deciding to try the temps under load i started decoding a avi file to dvd
and the estimated times was 59 minutes roughly the same time as my e2140
used to do it in and the cpu never reached 100 percent load but the temps raised to 60
ok now the part i didnt wanna tell you for fear of someone saying those things suck and you were better off with your e2140
the cpu i baught was the d935 3.2 dual core 4mb cache
please guys tell me that nero is lying to me and that my new cpu is far greater than the 1 i upgraded from lol |

That pentium D is pretty much the same as your old dual core pentium chip..... although your old chip runs much cooler.... Those PD always ran hot.... Quote: |

| That pretty much sums it up... I would go back to your old chip.... If you let us know what motherboard you have I can suggest an upgrade for it that will improve things.

E2140 should run a lot cooler, its what I have in my 2nd system right now.
though faster clock speeds, the Pentium D was a step back from what you had. if the E2140 was running at a good 2GHz overclocked it'd easily waste the Pentium D at 3.2GHz, mainly due to the entirely different architecture of the CPU, its based on the Intel Core 2 series chips, Pentium D is about 2 Generations behind that. well, at least 1 generation, since the original Core Series was based on some of Intels Mobile Chip designs. unlike the Pentium D and Core 2 which are primarily desktop designs.

ok so ive reverted back to my old e2140 and have applied the better themal paste that i had bought for the d 935 (i bought 2 lots just incase)
and i have to say the only time ive seen a cpu running this cool was on a water colled system
my idle tempereture is running at 15-20 !!!
100 percent load only raises the temps to 35-42
ime running the standard circle heatsink and fan
and i would like to overclock this cpu to around 2.2-2.4 nothing major
trouble is my motherboard seriously sucks and doesnt allow the changing of core voltages
so ime stuck with the maximum overclock ime able to produce using foxone which is 1.7
anything more and the pc freezes ime assuming it needs more voltage so
i guess i need a better mobo
or i can save and buy the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00 GHz for 114 pound
what is my best option guys and do u have any suggestions my current mobo is the foxconn 945g 7mc ksr
i realise that anything that i could buy from a shop would probably be an upgrade to this mobo but ime looking for best bang for buck (isnt everyone) |

hey thanks for that i think i will pick up a new processor
and heatsinnk/fan
by the way i would personally say the d935 is the worst processor ive ever had the missfortune of installing my meager e2140 runs crysis (not well) but it does run it
the d935 i had framerates of about 4 fps !!!!
i will certainly do more research in the future guys thanx for your help
ime gonna start scouring the net for a good deal on that cpu and maybe ille just swap the mobo too as ive got enough parts lying around to make another pc from this mobo and cpu to make a pretty good media centre
so what i guess ime saying is ive decided to not upgrade this but just build a new rig for gaming and dvd burning
ime just going to smile at my girlfreind cya and cheers again |

yeah, like Aaron said even a slower Core 2 like the E8400 will be faster, the big difference between the Core 2 and Pentium Dual Core's is the on CPU Cache Amounts, but as well as sometimes the FSB speeds, but mainly the Cache amounts, which sometimes can add a little extra oomph to the CPU.
for a media center build that E2140 would be nice, coupled with a Micro ATX board, or even a cheap Mini ITX socket 775 board if you can find one, like some of the Zotac's that were on the market for around $50 USD. |
