Yes and no. For desktop apps (integer), it actually outperforms the Athlon in per MHz analysis. Gaming (fpu) is subjective, but it performs quite well considering the age of the base design (P6). Most can, and should, argue that the Athlon is a superior processor.
As to benchmarks, the Athlon is superior when combined with DDR, but a Tualatin with DDR is definitely impressive as well. For the o/c crowd, the Tualatin at 2+ GHz is extremely impressive, often exceeding the Athlon in many tests.
It is all subjective to how one intends to use the processor.....
