Question
Where do I put the thermal adhesive?

I have a PIII 1ghz CPU ona an ASUS cusl-2c mobo. I just purchased a cpu shim, arctic silver III and a new heatsink with a Vantec 80mm tornado(84cfm). My question is do I put the arctic silver between the shim and the CPU, between the shim and the heatsink(sounds the most logical), or between both? Any advice would be welcome!

You may not need the shim at all, but that's your choice

The thermal compound (it's NOT adhesive, so don't expect the stuff to stick anything together ) should go between the raised part of the processor (the "die" or "core") that's sort of blue and shiny, and the bottom of the heatsink. The clip on the heatsink is what holds things together. A little dab will do ya, it just needs to be enough to fill in the imperfections on the bottom of the heatsink and the printing on top of the CPU itself, a very thin layer is sufficient. A big glob will actually decrease performance and can get the compund into places it's not supposed to be

Have fun!

Agreed .. you do not need the shim at all, especially if it is copper ... it might cause problems ..

Good luck

Smile

Thanks for the help, especially the link! Threw the shim in the closet and left it there(copper).
