| Need advice?
Hi, I am new to this forum and have been lurking her for a few weeks. I recenlty purchased the PC Chips M841lR with a case for $55 w/o shipping based on the good comments for being a great budget all in one board. I am now looking for some advice on the processor I should buy. I am going to install PC 2100 DDR Crucial memory in it.
I would like to buy the Duron 1.2 ghz or the Athlon XP 1700. My question is this. If I bought the Duron, would I use the full potential of the DDR memory? As in the 200mhz FSB compared to the 266mhz FSB? Would there be a great deal of difference in performance? The price difference would be about $40. I am thinking I should just spend the extra money and buy the XP 1700. This is my first PC to build and need all the advice I can get. What would you go with?
This is what I have/want to put into it:
Case/Power and Mobo w/shipping (M841LR)-----$85
Crucial DDR 2100 256MB-----------------------------$39.45
AMD Duron 1.2ghz or Athlon XP 1700 w/HSF-----$59-$98
Hard drive--20 gig???----------------------------------?
CD/RW----------------------------------------------------?
Thanks for the help! |

| welcome to TechIMO
I can't really help with your questions but if you are going to buy from Crucial, might I suggest clicking on the link thru TechIMO since the site can profit from that.
THANKS and glad to have you with us...

Well, thanks for the advice. I bought the XP 1800 for $108 from Googlegear.com. Also, I went through the link on this website to purchase the DDR memory from Crucial. I got it for $39.49 It should be at my home in a few days. Do you all think that the heat sink and fan that come with the retail box will be sufficient? Any tips on installing it would be helpful.
thanks,
Ken |

The retail heatsink and fan should be sufficient.I have a XP 1500 overclocked to a 1800 with a Thermeltake 6CU+ fan and the temps are stable at 41 deg; this is in my basement.I prefer to use a fan other than the one that comes with the retail version,my own preference. |
