The 1.2 Duron looks very tempting for its price. Plus, it's got performance.
The way I see it:
1.3
1.2
1.1

| DuronMorgan 1.2 Ghz Cache 192 Bus 200 (price $50)
From your list .. i would pick the above for Performance (new instructions), Stability (runs way cooler than TB) and Value ($50 ) ...

One thing occurred to me: Kinda of stupid to be even considering a 200FSB T'Bird"cause has little cash in value looking forwards --like six months--AND the Mobo with VIA SW which is the Chaintech Socket A sold at Compugeeks for $33 seems highly Overclockable:
Bios will manually set:
1. frequency
2. clock rate
3) Vcore
4) V ratios
What does that leave ?
I could get a T'Bird 1.4 Mhz, 266 FSB and run it within it native specs by OC the Frequency and multiplyer etc. Challange is to keep it cool but ability to set all four should allow not having to push any one too far. The VIA KTE/133 supports SDRAM 133.
Does this seem feasible ? |

if you are thinking about getting the 1.4Ghz Tbird, then do not the 266Mhz version, but the 200Mhz one.
This will leave lotsa room for fsb clocking, cause all tbird can run 266Mhz fsb, well, everyone I've seen till niow.
Be sure to get the AYHJA-Y version, they are great clockers.

There are XP athlons out there for the same prices as the Tbird. I'd look into that.

Yeah, would prefer the XP but there is some serious doubt as to whether it will work given the 200FSB. The was a BIOS update posted for Mobo to XP but a heck of a lot of variants of the Mobo. The Manual lists both KTE133 and KT133A as chipsets.
Questions: the FSB 266 are both $20 cheaper and can be used on more upscale Mobo'in future. Unless I fry it.
Seen the AYHJA T'bird FSB 266 at Newegg. Will that OC as well?
What about the strategy of using a 266FSB to begin with, and just using it's native frequency X multiplier ? Both the voltages can be adjusted as well.
Hopefully, Chaintech will give me the true facts. This was obviously designed as a OC MOBO....
Darn Dumb DooG trick # 2,089,674 not realizing the FSB was a flake !

I just got finished building a computer with the very same mbd but I went for the 1 gig Duron for the price ( $38.00) planning on trying to overclock and maybe upgrade to an XP when the prices fall a little. Seems to run fine w/ 256 MB PC 133 and a WD 40 gig 7200 RPM hd. With case, floppy, CDRW, Cdrom and nic card spent about $325.00 . |
