Hi, I'm new to this and I'm trying to figure out if I can simply swap a newer, faster celeron processor into my machine. I have an emachine that I don't care about, but I'm trying to learn about upgrading and overclocking.
It now has a celeron 633mhz, 128k L2 cache, 66mhz bus, 370 socket and it is a FC-PGA type.
I tried an older one - 466mhz, 128k L2 cache, 66mhz bus, 370 socket, but it was a PPGA type. It worked. So, will a different bus speed work? A different cache? What about a FC-PGA2 type? Any other factors to consider?
Thanks for any help,

All celerons with a 66mhz bus should work
but you should check with the motherboard manufacturer and see if you need a BIOS update
The FC-PGA2 uses a different socket if and will not fit in your mobo
however the PPGA uses the same socket interface as the FC-PGA and will work.
i think they made a celeron 733 with a 66mhz bus, they started with the 100mhz bus on the 800mhz celeron
also it might be possible to put a P3 in that mobo
again check with the motherboard manufactuter before buying the CPU. |

you might want to see if the mobo will auto detect the cpu fsb speed. If not then you're stuck at 66 mhz fsb. My old mobo will detect either 66, 100, or 133. I went from a 500 celery to a 950 celery with no problems. Nice upgrade for $60. Don't know if you'll get this lucky but it might be worth checking into...

Thanks for the help.
Is there a way to see if the mobo will auto detect the fsb speed without actually having a faster chip. |

I just read through the online documentation that the manufacturer of the Mobo supplied. I'm not sure if you can get that from an Emachine or not. It's at least worth looking into though.
I think you'll also need to know what voltage the old proc runs at and compare that to the new one that you want to swap in.
The one piece of information that i could never get was how high the mobo's clock multiplier would go. It was a $60 gamble and I'm glad I took a chance since everything worked.
Honestly, now that I'm thinking about it, if you're into learning about the internal guts of a computer I would get a copy of " Upgrading and Repairing PC's" by Scott Meuller. It's an incredible book and is very easy to read. There's not a whole lot in the edition that I have concerning overclocking but if you want to know how a computer works without getting bogged down in the math that's what I'd be reading. It actually reads really well. If he'd just do a book on how to configure Linux........ :-)
Hope that helps.

Scott, I picked up a copy of Scott Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PC's 'Linux Edition'" at a Border's Bookstore.
It was in the closeout bin.
I believe I paid 9.95 for it!

Maybe try Borders.com in the clearance section!

Thanks again for all of the help. I'm actually going to try it, also. I found a 1.10ghz for $70 - we'll see!
I did check out the emachine page & they don't offer much. I was able to find out the mobo is a "TriGem International Cognac+". So, I will look into that. I will also look for that book.
Thanks, this page has been a lot of help

My guess would be a 950 cele maybe a 1 gig processor on that m/b without a bios flash!
