The Intel Extreme Edition CPUs are not intended the the average user. Their slightly better performance over a non-EE Intel doesn't justify the unreasonable price.

The EE chips are only purchased by
    a. people with more money than sense.
    b. overclockers/benchmarkers looking to set records with extreme cooling.

The regular i7 has 4 cores, but 8 threads. The AMD X6 has six cores, but isn't as fast as the Intel clock for clock. The type of programs you use and your budget can help determine which would be the better choice.

I think their referring to the 6 core Intel EE CPU now.

but in any case, the price is ridiculous no matter how you put it.

Intels always commanded a premium on their chips over AMD for as long as I can remember.

and usually rightly so, do to being faster clock for clock, though in some instances that isn't true, but the price of the EE chips has always been absurd.

IMO the only real benefit I see the avg user getting out of the x6 phenom is it's a drop in upgrade. If you are running an older dual, triple or even quad for a pretty darn cheap price you can drop it in and you don't need a new board, new ram ect. Most users won't fully utilize the chip but you get a few new features like turbo core
