    Upgrade a laptop cpu

I have an Emachines D620 made by Acer. It currently runs an Athlon 2650e in an AM2 socket at 15w at 1.6ghz. I've read several forums where people have upgraded this processor for faster and some time multi-core ones.

Most that I find or have read about people using run at 45 to 65w. What do you guys suggest? And what can be done to handle the extra heat?

The actual mechanics of the swap is easy. One panel on the bottom exposes the CPU, wireless card, HD and memory.

As a side note: can you find a wireless card with more power or is it limited by law?

There is not much on that laptop, most E-machine owners are not geeks.

This sight has users that have upgraded, but all I know is what I read

Acer Aspire 5515 Processor Upgrade??? - CNET Laptop hardware component & upgrades Forums

Here is a chip list with the RS690MC and what it can run, but that doesn't mean a laptop necessarily, it is just what the chip is designed for.

I bought this machine because I needed a laptop, it was on sale for $299 at Best Buy and I had a $100 off coupon from a previous purchase, so $199 plus tax. It's a good little machine that dual boots Ubuntu and Vista. I just thought I might try... sprucing it up a bit, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the info. That's about where I'd been, so I guess it's really about picking one and scoring a decent price online and then trying it. I found an Athlon 64 x2 3800+ that runs on that socket at 35w (which I figured would help with the heat), but boy are they pricey at $100+

No. it has a regular socket with a locking arm. It's a pretty cool laptop as far as the way it's made. I just don't want to burn it up.

Well if you know the socket your current cooler should work, it is my understanding that coolers are designed to cover all processors of that socket type because aftermarket coolers are sold by socket types so one would assume that it works with all CPUs of that scket type. Two things to remember: socket type and mobile version of that CPU for laptops now you're set ( don't touch the pins)

Yes, I'm going to use an AM2 chip of 45w or less. I increased the size of the vent holes in the cover with my dremel and I won't be using it on my lap without a hard surfaced lapdesk. According to all the articles it should work. I'm looking for a 4850e chip, dual core 2.5ghz at 45w, it should make it scream... compared to the 1.6ghz single core I'm running now.
