i5 to C2D Quad or i7 allowed?
Hello! Im just newbie here in this site of techie people

Right now, I was located at KSA.. I was planning to change the processor of my 2-month old Toshiba satellite L-505 i5-430M to more powerful C2D Quad or i7 Extreme quad also..
my question was: 1) is it ok to do it or not? I'm planning to buy online and send it here in KSA.. 2) is it true that i7 produce more heat? 3) what are the other tips you can advice for me to speed up my laptop except increase the RAM?.. And last, how can I activate turbo boost of my laptop? I read some information regarding activation but all them was telling that it was automatic and there was no an "on/off" switch for that..
Here's specification of my laptop:
-i5-430M @ 2.27 ghz with intel turbo boost (@2.53 ghz)
-4 gb DDR3-Ram
-500 GB HDD
-Win7 Home Premium
Thankyou very much for any advice!

You cant generally change a laptops processor as far as im aware, the things you can affect are the RAM, HD and maybe tweeking if the bios allows it; try putting an SSD in, should increase speed dramatically compared to a standard HDD..

If it is not soldered in, you can change them just like a desktop.
They have screw on phase change heat sinks, with thermal pads.
Not that is easy or worth it though.Hard Sayin Not Knowin

Any recommendations would require the full model number.
I would go by Toshiba's recommendations, if you feel you have to do it, because, I doubt you are going to find anyone who has done it.
We can probably tell you what fits, by the chip set and socket, but if the cooling is not good enough, where are you going to get one?
I also doubt an I5 laptop board will take an I7.
Any quad core would be 45 min 55 max Watts, yours is 18W
Battery life will suffer also.Last edited by stroyal; July 26th, 2010 at 05:36 PM.

Oh, and turbo boost can be enabled or disabled in the BIOS, other than that it is entirely automatic.

Just to throw a few pennies in here. "Allowed" is the wrong terminology here, "compatible" is the question. You need to know if am i7 would be compatible and AFAIK no it wouldn't be and no a Core 2 Quad def. wouldn't be as they are entirely different sockets.
Now that said that laptop should be plenty powerful and fast enough for almost anything you throw at it. What types of apps are you seeing a slow down in? or where or what are you doing that you perceive it being slow?
I should also add that with 4gbs of ram unless you are doing some serious multi-tasking you def should not need more RAM!!Last edited by RicheemxX; July 26th, 2010 at 06:14 PM.

How about I change the Ram from 4 to 8 gb (4x4) DDR3 1066mhz? I've learned that toshiba is on sale of 4 gb in one stick.. does it effect my OS, functions of my laptop or not? my stock ram was 4gb (2x2) DDR3 1066 mhz..

Well that's all fine and dandy but that doesn't really provide any answers as to why you think you need to upgrade anything. As I mentioned with the cpu and amount of ram you have in it now it should be more than capable of handling anything you throw at it. Gaming on the other hand could be limited by the GPU, which I see no mention of.
It would really be helpful if you answered the question I posted earlier. What types of apps are you seeing a slow down in? or what are you doing that you perceive the laptop as being slow?Last edited by RicheemxX; July 31st, 2010 at 03:09 PM.

Well in terms of gaming, your GPU will hold in back. Integrated graphics can run some games on med settings but they really aren't meant to tackle most games.
As for your other slow downs there is no reason that laptop should be slow opening a web browser or doing basic presentations. You might run hijack this and paste the log so we can see if there are any nasty entries, or other items you can disable.

Along with what rich has already asked.
whats the speed of the hard drive? 4200, 5400RPM, etc?
if its a low speed RPM drive it could be why its slow loading things as well.
As to the gaming issue, unless that laptop has an upgradeable GPU module, and depending on what can be installed if it does, your pretty much screwed for using it as a gaming laptop.
Intels graphics are not intended to be used as a gaming machine, sure it can run most $10 Walmart sold PopCap Games like Bejeweled, and similar puzzle/strategy games, and may run some much older games but for anything newer, if it can run it, it won't run it well.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Also, I saw the first episode of Titan when it came out, but plan on waiting until it finishes airing to watch the entire show. It is the highest rated new show this season on MAL so it is apparently...
