Will my processor be overkill?
I'm building a gaming PC for around 800-850$ and I was planning on getting the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor. But now I'm wondering if that's necessary for my setup. My entire setup is
GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory
SAPPHIRE 100283-3L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
Western Digital Caviar Green WD5000AADS 500GB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model
Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Really the only time there is any real "overkill" is when the system is overly out of balance, and that usually happens when you build a low end machine with an overly expensive/powerful video card which is bottlenecked by the CPU
Yours is a typical setup and reasonably balanced

In one word, No.
Whether the CPU will be Fully Utilized, thats another story, depending on what you use it for.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green
