I have a tight budget and to the point of buying the processor for my abit board. I have narrowed it down to the Athlon XP 1800 and 2000. There is a fifty dollar difference (85-135) between the two. Is the performance of the 2000 that much better than the 1800? The computer will probebly have to last about 2-3 years so I a year will I regret getting the 1800 or is there not that much of a noticable difference. (The extra 50 will probebly go into buying a better video card) So I guess its between the 1800 and a real nice video card or the 2000 and a decent video card. Any thought?

An 1800 and a real nice video card will have more longevity than a 2000 with an average video card.
A supercharged video card can make up for a lot more than the small MHz processor difference between those two.

I would go with the 1800 and the better video card as well.

If you don't mind me asking where did you find an XP 1800 for $85. That's a pretty good deal. Guess I better start looking around. I'm still stuck at 1.2 ghz.
Edit: I agree with them. That extra $50 will really make a difference on a vid card.

No, the 1800+ is the sweetspot now (Mhz/$). Performance difference is not that different (and definitely not worth 50% more money). |

Wow. You guys are fast. I guess ill be buying the 1800 and picking out the video card tonight. Scott Tiger, you can get the 1800 for 74 at econopc, 78 at accubyte, or 81 at sonicparts (w/out shipping) but they are all OEM-not retail. Thanks again!

Yeah, I went for the 1800 from Newegg on Friday. $104, since I wanted the year-long warranty too. Why am I paying that much? Well, I've had bad experiences with accubyte and econopc. Plus Newegg already has my order shipped out, plus the shipping was free! How they're pulling that one off I don't know, but you sometimes just can't beat newegg.

Thanks for the info guys. I only look @ newegg.com when I looking for parts but I didn't know that you get an 1800+ for that cheap.
I've never bought an OEM processor though and didn't consider that you were quoting OEM prices. Retail comes with a fan and it only cost a little more anyway.
Still, I've got quite a few friends how've bought OEM proc's and had good luck with them timrsl so it's up to you if you choose to go that route. I suppose you could start another thread asking who likes to buy what. :-) I just like to err on the side of caution and to me that means retail. You do usually pay more for it though.
Thanks again for all the response timrsl and Emc2. Hope your new builds go well.

If you get an OEM processor, make sure you have a warranty...you have no idea how many ppl on these forums and I know personally who've had their processor die after 60-90 days, when they only got the standard 30-day warranty. |

Thanks for the info Emc2. That will just reinforce the idea in my head that I need to stick with retail procs. They don't cost much more either.
Think I'm going to wait until the 2000+ is in the $100 range retail before I buy. At the rate the market's going I'm guessing that'll be in late Sept or Early Oct.
