I know this is probably all greek to you, but at some point it will lose the R and become Geek to you, like many of us LOL.

But seriously, yeah, the first things you'll want to try out to get the hang of things is Small increments in the Front Side Bus on older hardware, for CPU and RAM.

Its usually the easiest thing to do, and learn, once you start to get the hang of that, then moving on to more of the advanced stuff, like Clock Multipliers for the CPU if accessible, RAM Timings, Voltage settings, etc.

my experience, has only really been in the FSB and Multiplier settings for OCing, have never bothered messing with Voltages, or fine tuning RAM timings.

    Sounds like a plan!

Q: How do you know people have WAAY too much time on their hands?

A: When your browsing the Newegg reviews on a 6 core proc. and they are trying to overclock it.

Yes, I noticed right away that some of you guys have some really revved up systems.

I've had a Barton 2500 overclocked to 3000 for 8 years now, so they can last a long time, if you don't go crazy, and keep it cool.
It will do 3200 easy, but would need the voltage raised, and I want to be safe for now.
This is an overclock that you can notice, but I agree most of those overclocks are gone.

A good example of the cost of manufacturing a chip, having no relationship to the sale price is, the 386DX and the 386SX.
    I know, I'm dating myself.

The DX had a math co-processor, the SX did not, but they only made DXs.

They would disable the co-processor in a perfectly good DX to make it an SX, and sold it for less.

Why wouldn't you do that? Means single threaded apps are much quicker.

    Isn't a 6 core good enough?

as in only using a single core.

A 6 core clocked at 3GHz, Hypothetically OC'd at 4GHz, when using single threaded, or in this case single core apps should run better.

I think that is what Aaron is referring to.

Every program I've run I have noticed that all the cores are being used. So I don't understand this single threaded thing.

    Bad news.

I discovered that my Intel DG965WH system board with a Q6600 processor cannot be overclocked, so I guess my "project" is dead in the water.

When my budget allows me to put together a new system, I'll make sure that I get a board/processor combination that is friendly towards that kind of customization.
