New guy without a clue
Hello all, I am really(really) new to this and i searched online and found this forum hoping to get some answers and advice on upgrading my machine. I did search the forum for a little bit to try to find answers before hand and i didn't find what (i thought) was the information i needed.
I own an fx 7020 pc that i had bought from best buy several years ago and it had since gone ka-plunk. I decided to try to clean it one day because it wasn't working right. I know there will probably be a thunder of face-palms after i tell you all this but, i took it apart and i didn't realize the processor was locked into the slot by a couple of levers. I go to town on trying to get it out and long story short.. i think i broke my motherboard (after hearing a loud crack) and i know i messed up my processor. The processor had some bent pins and i thought i could just bend them back...... needless to say its all jacked up and the pc will not even turn on anymore. Actually, it does turn on but the power button no longer lights up and nothing comes on the screen. A fan does immediately come on and stay on but i don't know what that means.
Now, my question(s). Can i just get another motherboard and it would probably work? Or, do i need a new processor also? I wanted to upgrade it anyways. What could i upgrade it to?
I use my computer for games, school, and art. I don't have the funds to buy a new pc outright but i figured i could just fix it and make it better. If anyone with knowledge could point me in the right direction. Maybe a website that has all the info on how to this kind of thing and if it would be worth it.
Whew.......anyways, thanks for your time and responses in advance.
Oh, and if i need to be more specific on my computer specs, let me know.

Is this the PC you have?
are they the same specs?
If so yes its not only possible to upgrade, but shouldnt be more than a motherboard and CPU swap.

Yes, that is my expensive paper weight. except im pretty sure i have GEforce 8800.Thanks for the response, folks. These parts you listed, will they upgrade my pc or are they just replacement parts for the stock model? I had read somewhere about motherboards only being able to upgrade to a certain point. I just want a pc that can keep up with today's games and programs without spending a bunch.
Anywho.. if there is a website that someone knows of that explains the process of upgrading and just the basics of computer building, it would be much appreciated.
Again thanks for the responses.Last edited by truckbuilder; February 23rd, 2011 at 08:42 PM.

the parts in the post above are more or less just replacement parts, not really upgrades.
