    Unlocking Phenom II X2 550

    hello

Before i relised id have to pay £69.99 for windows to be installed on my pc i was going to get my local pc shop to ''unlock'' my processer for me, but since im not paying £70 for something i can do my self im going to have to try to ''unlock'' the processer myself : D

Iv never done unlocking or anything before , although i have watch some youtube video's on my processer and how to unlock it

how hard would you say unlocking is? if i take my time and read what i have to do very carefully do u think its possable to do so without any aditional cooling systems(Im on a tight budget)

I did talk to Aaron very basicly on the matter, he said i should be ''ok'' if i just unlock it without overclock ''wich i plan to do' so it will be X4 3.1ghz insted of x2

For starters you need to mention what motherboard are you running, and are you running the Black edition or regular edition of the chip?

Some of the boards come with an unlock feature in the bios that makes it really easy

Just an FYI, Google has a ton of info, videos, guides ect on unlocking and overclocking these chips. You can't always expect the same results you see elsewhere but its a good start, and no reason to reinvent the wheel. I'd read a few guides, watch a video or two and then if you get stuck start asking specific questions. Just make sure that when it does come time to ask that you provide as much specific information as possible

Should be an option in the BIOS called auto clock calibration. There is never a guarantee unlocking cores will work and run okay.

    FYI = For Your Information

BE = Black Edition (indicates an unlocked multi in AMD's current generation of CPU's).

as far as i known Gigabyte boards don't support unlocking cores
from what i read up on

you need to have a MSI or an ASUS board
all you do is flip a toggle switch on the mother board, very easy

    only black edition dual CPU's

Not sure where you read that's not true, they options are right there in the bios. Asus, Asrock and MSI all have a little easier feature to use, but Gigabyte still supports the option.

ASUS M4A89GTD Pro - A Core Unlocking 890GX for $140 - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

"The action zone on this board is near the DIMM slots; hardware level core unlocking at the flick of a switch. To the right you’ve got a Turbo switch which applies an instant overclock much like MSI’s OC Genie."

i put a system together with this board and unlock a 550 BE ,that why i known about the switch and this board comes with apps that start up before the operating system
good if you run skype or others
