Updating Dell to 1 GB Ram

Hello everyone. Im looking to update my Dell Dimension 3000 XP to Windows 7. I ran a Windows 7 Adviser check and it says i need to have about 1 GB of Ram for Windows 7 to operate correctly. Currently i have 256 MB of Ram. How can i upgrade to 1 GB of Ram and is Windows 7 advised for a Dell 3000?

With as old as that system is you'd be far better of scrapping the idea of upgrading anything and looking at buying something newer. And why on earth would you want to run Windows 7 on it? XP will run much faster.

Even on 1GB of RAM, its going to run sluggish as hell. On newer more faster powerful systems, it can run on 1GB fine, with a little sluggishness, but with a machine that old, your going to want at least 1.5 to 2GB in it. and I doubt it will support that much.

Looked up the PC's specs and it will support up to 2GB max memory, up to 1GB Sticks of DDR.

Also, what size Hard drive do you have in it, Windows 7 Takes up almost 16GB at least of room just for the OS, if your running a smaller drive, your probably going to have to get a newer bigger one, or at least a 2nd drive.

To be honest, installing Windows 7 on a system this old is a waste, and you'd be better off just saving up a few hundred bucks and build a newer more updated system to run Windows 7 on.

was someone elses thread around here yesterday I pieced together almost an entire PC, minus the OS and Hard drive/DVD Drive, and cost around or just under $400.

Ok thanks for the help. I just thought it might be cheaper spending a couple hundred upgrading than 7 or 8 hundred getting a whole new desktop.

I linked a Parts list for a $400 range Budget gaming PC in your other thread, take a look at it, the only part that may be an issue is the Motherboard, its an Open Box product, a new in box one would be a bit more in cost, but the total system price is still in that general range.

I'd have to agree windows 7 has some new features and looks more stylish but it will decimate your pc.

bottom line is newer software is more complex requiring more computing power to run, your PC hardware is to old to handle it, it would be throwing your money away as XP will run much faster for you.

Plus you may run into driver problems. You most likely won't find Win 7 drivers for a Dimension 3000 on Dell's website.

I know a few people that run Win 7 on a Dim 3000 with 2GB of RAM. Runs perfectly fine. Because it's an Intel chipset and integrated graphics, the drivers are no problem.
