Can I combine 64 and 128 ram in hte same computer?

    Hi
I am working on a Compaq Presario SR1834NX desktop with 1Gb of ram. It is running slowly so I ran disk cleanup, checkdsk and defrag. I then ordered more memory from Crucial. Their scanner told me to buy 64bit ddr400 pc3200 memory. When I added the new ram to the computer, I got a long beep. After juggling the sticks around in the slots, I managed to get 1 of the new sticks to work with the old pair. At first, I concluded that one of the memory slots was damaged. But I just noticed a message during boot that the original memory is 128bit. Can I combine 128bit with 64bit memory? Or is that why I am having problesm getting all 4 memory slots to work?
    Any help would be appreciatted.

there is no 128-bit RAM for standard Consumer computers, even current DDR3 based systems are only 64-bit.

Its when its combined in Dual Channel mode (using 2 Identical sticks of 64-bit together as a single pair, much like using RAID 0 for 2 Hard drives) that it becomes 128-bit.

Now unless your talking about Memory Capacity, 128MB or 64MB (MegaByte)...?

Thanks for the info. I concluded that some of the RAM was 128bit on the basis of something I saw on the POST screen during boot. I do think that it might be using dual channel mode. I'll have to run a couple more experiments to verify what is going on. I'll get back to you tonight or tommorrow night.
