    DDR3 Clock

    Hello there guys,

I´ve got a very simple question:

Is it possible to "overclock" the MSI G41M-P35 to make it able to handle 1333MHZ RAM?

There will be no guarantee it would work, you could try some 1333MHZ RAM and it might downclock to the max supported, then you can try clocking as high as it can... Though chances are it won't work and it will be a waste of time if you are already running 1066MHZ....

It should handle 1333 out of the box, I would think, just have to change setting in Bios.

here's the boards specs from newegg

    LGA 775

    CPU Type
    Core 2 Quad/Duo / Pentium Dual-Core / Celeron

    FSB
    1333/1066/800MHz

1333 FSB for the CPU, RAM should be able to run 1333 as well.

Newegg.com - MSI G41M-P35 LGA 775 Intel G41 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Though it states 1066 RAM in specs: DDR3 1066/800

but It should be able to run 1333.

There is a Bios update for the board for Improved Memory Compatibility, how ever it doesn't state exactly what the compatibility issues are, whether its for faster RAM, or for 1066/800 RAM that had issues.

(I downloaded, extracted and read the text document describing it)

    MSI Global – Mainboard - G41M-P35

But as Aaron mentioned there's no guarantee that it will handle 1333.

are you just trying to run the RAM at 1333, and nothing else, or is this part of an overall CPU/RAM overclock?

if its just the Memory your trying to run faster, there won't be much performance gain if any going from 1066 to 1333, with just memory alone, aside from Memory Speed Benchmarks.

The MSI site has a support list showing they've tested the board with 1333 ram and it has passed so it might be possible depending on the memory you have and what CPU/FSB you are running now. But it really won't matter much, even at the higher speed you won't see much real world difference. So of it doesn't run at 1333mhz as Aaron said it should down clock to 1066 and run just fine.

Yep, I missed that LOL, saw it listed under support, but since it didn't say Memory supported I skipped it over:

Yeah I wasn't sure what was in there at first either. So I clicked it to see and spotted that.

thanx guys, but Ive got another question. Because I got a Q9400 and a 9800Gx2 i dont wanna waste money building up a complete new I5/I7 system. One of the main reasons is that my monitor is just able to handle 1280 X 1024 and I dont got any money at all. However I´m able to give back my G41M P35 and get a P35 diamond. So my question is: is it worth to take the diamond? and how much performance loss will I get by running my GX2 at PCI-E 1.1?

You will not lose any performance at all.

you should have more overclocking features on the P35

As you mentioned you'd be reverting back to a slower PCIe max bandwidth.

I don't think the 9800GX2 will be choked much on x16 of PCIe 1.1 spec, but I wouldn't take the chance.

Your really not going to gain much, if anything the P35 might even have less support for CPU's than the G41 will.

It does state it supports the 45nm Core 2 series, but not sure exactly which models it supports.

It does support 1333 DDR3 though.

As long as your only using the single 9800GX2 I don't think it will be hurt too much by the 1.1 spec x16 slot, just don't use a card in the 2nd slot and it won't downsize it to x8 by x8 which WILL hurt the GX2's performance. (even though the board only supports ATI Crossfire, the GX2 by itself will work fine)

Feature wise it is a better board, but you are reverting back to an older series Chipset and PCIe 1.1.

Its really hard to say. If this is solely based on running 1333MHz DDR3 at 1333, its not worth the hassle. But if your looking for more OCing options and abilities for the CPU not just the RAM, then it might be worth it.

Thank u guys. I think ill take the p 35 cuz i want overclocking and cuz the g41m also uses pcie 1.1.i think a bios update will make my 9400 fully compatible to that board.
