Processor Upgrade Consideration

Hey everybody. First of all I hope i'm posting this in the right place... Anyway, i'm trying to upgrade my old single-core processor to a dual-core one.

The old processor's specs are:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
x64 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 2
Physical Processors: 1
Logical Processors: 2
65 nm

Also I checked the motherboard specs and it's an Alhena5,
which has a socket type of 775.

The new processor's specs are:
Intel Pentium D 945 CPU 3.40 GHz
LGA 775
Dual-Core
CPU-PD945-R
65 nm

I guess my main question is, would this new processor be compatible with my system?

And also, this new CPU does not come with a cooling fan and I have absolutely no idea
how to match up the right kind for this new CPU. My only thought is that it should be
compatible with 65 nm.

Welcome to TechIMO!
Is this your board?
HP Alhena5 motherboard ECS RC415ST-HM Socket 775 Pentium D 3-5 DAYS SHIPPING

It takes a "o Pentium D 900 series (Pressler, 65nm)"

If this is the CPU, it should work.

Heatsink/fan

Yep that's the one, Alhena5. And thanks for the help.

The only other thing I'm really unsure of is which heatsink/fan I need for the new CPU.

I researched a bit and found this:
Intel D34017-002 Pentium D Socket 775 Heatsink/Aluminum Fan Cooler

This is my best guess so far.
Another question about these I have is which is a better
choice, aluminum or copper? I hear copper is heavier but don't see where the performance
comes into play on the difference between the two.

I'm not sure what the difference between aluminum or copper either. You would think aluminum would be better due to the coolness properties.

Copper can Absorb MORE heat, but dissipates it at a much slower rate, where as Aluminum doesn't and dissipates heat at a much higher rate than copper.

One of the reasons why you see a lot of Copper Core with Aluminum Heatsinks.

You probably could use the existing Heatsink, but if your looking at a new one, then something like this would be fine.

If it will fit in your case: Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER RR-H101-22FK-RI 80mm Long life sleeve bearing CPU Cooler
