    Are there any compatible CPUs?

Hi. I'm a total noob when it comes to computers, so I need a lot of help. I don't have alot of money, so instead of building a PC or buying a completely new one, I'm upgrading it bit by bit until I have a good amount of money for a good PC. Here are my Specs, according to CPU-Z:

    Motherboard
    Model: Dell 0WG864
    Chipset: Intel P965/G965
    Southbridge: Intel 82801HH (ICH9DH)
    BIOS: 2.4.0

    -----

    CPU
    Specification: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D 820 CPU 2.80GHz
    Package: Socket 775 LGA
    Technology: 90nm

Help would be very much appreciated. Please tell me if you need more information. I just need to know if there are any compatible CPUs I can upgrade to. If there aren't any, oh well. Thanks

Your chipset can run a 65nm Core 2 Duo CPU with either an 800 or 1066 FSB. I recall that a 4.1GHz Pentium D was about equal clock for clock with a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo.

Something like this E6700 would be a huge upgrade from your 820D.

Might be able to run the Pentium, but the difference in L2 cache really is noticeable.

even so, it should still a noticeable upgrade from the older 2.8GHz P4.

Problem is finding an Older Core 2 Duo "Conroe" chip for cheap.

    Here we go: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz 1066MHz 4MB Socket 775 Dual-Core CPU Intel E6600

Not to be confused with the Pentium E6600, which was newer, probably not compatible, and runs at 3+GHz.

Before you upgrade what exactly are you using the computer for? I mean if you are just browsing the web and doing some basic stuff there really wouldn't be much need to add in another old cpu. This would be especially if you are already saving up to buy another new PC. Any of the parts you might be adding to this machine wouldn't be able to be re-used aside from a possible gpu, psu upgrade or drives.

So why bother spending the cash when you could use that towards the new machine?

I use my computer alot for gaming. I play games like Skyrim and Mass Effect alot. Right now, I'm in highschool. I want to save up money for an extremely high performance computer in college. If I buy parts, I'll probably be set back less than if I bought a new computer that has the specs I want (Which are high)

Nice deal. That's a great CPU, I still use mine in the HTPC.

yeah, I remembered seeing it somewhere the other day looking at used/refurbished Core 2 era CPU's on Newegg and Geeks, as well as other sites. I remembered there was a 6600 model somewhere, when I looked on Newegg, they had the Pentium E6600 but it was a 1333Mhz Bus and remembered that one was one of the 45nm Wolfdale cores.

So I checked Geeks and sure enough there was the Core 2 Duo E6600, which was what I was looking for.

I remember that CPU as being pretty good, and I had to make a sacrifice in costs with my old Core 2 Duo system, and had to get the lower E6400 that only ran at 2.13GHz.

But even that E6400 out performed most if not all Pentium 4 CPU's as well.

... And yet, it was still a bit of a bottleneck for my 320MB Geforce 8800GTS back then as well LOL.
