Socket FM1 CPU "Requires discrete GPU"
I've ordered an AMD Athlon II X4 641 processor by mistake (meant to order an AM3 but hey ho).
This might be a bit of a newbie question but I've been out of system building for a while and I'm trying to get my head around the new APUs.
Basically as the title says, on the processor box it states "Socket FM1 - Requires Discrete GPU".
Now I'm looking for a board to put this in without spending too much money and came across the ASRock A75M A75 Motherboard Series Manufacturing - ASRock Inc.
Will this board/CPU combo work without a separate graphics card?

I had to look around, but no, that particular Liano has no integrated graphics, and the motherboard doesn't either.
It has video plugs, but relies on an APU, per say.
You will need a graphics card.

Newegg.com - ASUS ENGT430/DI/1GD3/MG(LP) GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card
Cheapest card that about equals 6530 OD or 6550OD 534 and 632 Passmark respectively;
The GT 430 is 595 Passmark

Not really concerned about video performance, it's actually going into a business machine. So if I find a board with integrated graphics it will run OK right? Such as this one A75MH :: Motherboard :: BIOSTAR

I thought you already had the board.
That board doesn't have onboard video either, and of the 41 boards, on New Egg, none have it either.
It says "Integrated video by CPU model"
Is there even a socket FM1, that has onboard video?
I don't know, but I doubt it.Last edited by stroyal; May 10th, 2012 at 06:10 PM.

The cheapest cards I see, are the 8400GS @ 124 passmark, the GT210 @ 208 Passmark, and the HD5450 @ 253 passmark.
The HD5450 is the cheapest, and better than the other 2, at the moment, here.
There doesn't seem to be a jump in performance until the GT 430, but that's US prices.
Give me a link, and I can see what the best cheap one is.Last edited by stroyal; May 10th, 2012 at 06:07 PM.

AMD A6-3650 Llano APU Review - Page 3
As you can see, our A6-3650 sample is physically identical to the previous Athlon II and Phenom II processors that we are all familiar with.[ However, these new chips have 905 pins instead of 938 pins, hence the reason for the new FM1 socket.] As we explained in our preview of the GIGABYTE A75-UD4H motherboard, AMD have wisely decided to keep the same AM2/AM3 mounting bracket for the FM1 socket, so all your previous CPU coolers will be re-usable. Hawk-eyed enthusiasts will notice that this sample was manufactured in the 23rd week of 2011, so it is even fresher silicon than our A8-3850
the OP will need to buy one of these type of processors for that board and
he/she is good to go
cheers

It's the processor I already have, not the board. Seems my only option is to by a Skt FM1 board + graphics card.
Thanks for the input.

Almost all of the FM1 socket CPU's have an integrated Discreet Graphics chip, Radeon HD 6400 or 6500 series Graphics chip. The one chip you have is the sole CPU in the series that lacks an integrated GPU.
Like the Socket 1156 an 1155 Intel CPU's, most of which also have a Graphics chip on the CPU, the motherboards that have Video outputs also lack onboard graphics.
so in other words users with motherboards meant for these types of CPU's, need a dedicated Graphics card in order to have video output on them, when not using a CPU with integrated GPU.
so, if you already have the CPU, then as you mention your only option is to buy a FM1 socket board, and a cheap graphics card to go with it.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

The two cards should both use the same driver install. With Afterburner, I know it will work on the non-MSI card as individually installed with no manufacturer lockout, but I don't know if it...
