    overclocking help wanted

    Here's what I have:
    Mid way through an upgrade
    core i5 3570 3.4 GHz
    B75 Chipset Gigabyte mobo
4gig Kingston KVR1333 blah blah blah

    My questions are as follows:
Can the ram run at 1600 (my mainboard will allow it) without frying the ram if it doesnt work.
    and
if i OC the CPU base clock too high to the point where I can not boot, can the CPU be irreparably damaged?

    1) Maybe (you won't fry it either way, unless you screw up the volts)

    2) Yes, if you mess with the volts and put in the wrong amount.

To be honest, it's not that often that ddr3 1333 does do 1600though, unless it's some really decent memory as is.

You mention heres what you have then say mid way through an upgrade? That list is already in your possession, no?
    Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit
    File Server: AMD Opteron 180 / 3gb DDR400 / Nvidia 6200 / WinXP Home 32bit / Lubuntu 12.10
    Laptop: HP-Compaq nc8430/ Intel CoreDuo T2400 / 2gb DDR2 667/ Ati x1600 / WinXP Pro 32bit

indeed I have already purchased the CPU and mainboard.
my upgrade is going to be done in stages, ShyguyXPX has given advice that i have decided to go with so the next steps include a 120gig vertex 3 ssd, and a GTX660ti

and ram wise i am undecided between 8 gigs hyperx blu or 16 gigs total regular kingston 1333 (what i have now with a few extra gigs)

volts i dont know if i can change. if i can though, what would be a good way to determine safe voltages based on speed increase?

In this case, if overclocking was in mind, is there anyway to cancel return your cpu and get the K version? It's MUCH better for overclocking and has an unlocked multiplier so your ram won't hold you back as much.

Sadly it's too late for that. i'm stuck with a locked multiplier.. Further into that, CPU-z reads my multiplier as 38 giving me 4.0GHz whilst Core Temp reads it as x36.
is there a reason for this?

B75 is going to have trouble with OCing options as well.

so won't be much if anything for CPU OCing on that board. GPU Overclocking is another thing all together though.

but Both B75 and H77 are not designed to allow much if anything in Overclocking.
